En 1967, il se marie à Jacqueline Alberta Gray, avec laquelle il a deux enfants : Nicole (ambassadrice des États-Unis aux Bahamas de 2009 à 2011), et Alex Du Bois Avant. Jacqueline Avant est tuée le 1er décembre 2021, à l'âge de 81 ans lors d'un cambriolage à leur domicile. (fr)
