| - Christopher James "Chris" Holland (born 11 September 1975 in Whalley, Lancashire) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Leigh Genesis having joined in 2008 from Southport. He started his career at Preston North End, making just one league appearance before signing for Newcastle United. He won the first of his England under-21 caps while at Newcastle, but an eye injury hindered his progress and he joined Birmingham City on loan in 1996. The loan was made permanent in December 1996 for a fee of £600,000, and he played over 70 games during his three years at the club.In 2000 he left Birmingham, joining Huddersfield Town for a fee of £100,000, where he scored the first goal of his professional career, the winner against Nottingham Forest in March of that year. He played regularly for three seasons, but when told by manager Peter Jackson that a new contract would not be offered at the end of the 2003-04 season, he chose to join Boston United. After two years, preferring to play regularly albeit at a lower level, he moved to Southport, nearer his Lancashire home. Despite Southport's relegation to Conference North at the end of the 2006-07 season, Holland has agreed a new contract at the club and has been appointed club captain. Chris is also a former England youth and Under 21 player. Holland has been a vital part of the Southport side in 2007/2008. Known for his hard work and his ability to do all the simple things, it is hoped Holland will captain Southport to success in the play-offs. A fans favourite, scored his first goal at Hyde United, wild celebrations followed. He then scored again 3 weeks later in Southport's 3-1 victory at his old club Boston. (en)
