- Das Kernkraftwerk Chooz liegt in Frankreich in der Gemeinde Chooz an der Maas. Es verfügt über drei Druckwasserreaktoren, ein stillgelegter von Westinghouse und zwei in Betrieb befindliche vom französischen Typ N4. Der Kraftwerksbetreiber ist die EDF. Das Kraftwerk liegt 3 Kilometer von der Grenze zu Belgien entfernt, zwischen der französischen Stadt Charleville-Mézières und der belgischen Gemeinde Dinant. In der Hauptwindrichtung liegen deutsche Städte Koblenz (200 km), Wiesbaden / Mainz (245 km) und Frankfurt (270 km); Aachen (Nordost) liegt 115 km, Köln (Nordost) liegt 180 km und Trier (Ost-Südost) 137 km entfernt. Der erste Reaktor am Standort war Chooz A, ein unterirdisch gelegener Druckwasserreaktor von Westinghouse. Der Block wurde im Jahr 1991 stillgelegt und wird seit 2008 abgebaut. Es sind zwei Blöcke mit jeweils 1.500 MW elektrischer Leistung in Betrieb: Chooz B1 und Chooz B2. Die beiden Blöcke sind vom Typ N4 des Herstellers Framatome ANP. Die Bauarbeiten an Chooz B1 begannen am 1. Januar 1984, Netzanschluss war am 30. August 1996 und der kommerzielle Leistungsbetrieb begann am 15. Mai 2000. Die Bauarbeiten an Chooz B2 begannen am 31. Dezember 1985, Netzanschluss war am 10. April 1997 und der kommerzielle Leistungsbetrieb begann am 29. September 2000. Gemessen an der Nettoleistung sind sie nach dem Kernkraftwerk Taishan in China die beiden leistungsstärksten Blöcke der Welt, gemessen an der Bruttoleistung von je 1560 MW, sind es knapp nach dem Kernkraftwerk Civaux die drittgrößten der Welt. Es sind ungefähr 700 Personen in Chooz beschäftigt. Seit 2009 wird am Standort das Double-Chooz-Experiment betrieben. Die französische Regierung hat 2020 eine Verlängerung um weitere 10 Jahre für alle in Betrieb befindliche Reaktoren um weitere 10 Jahre von 40 auf 50 Jahre Laufzeit angekündigt. - The Chooz Nuclear Power Station (French: Centrale nucléaire de Chooz) lies in the municipality of Chooz in the Ardennes department, France, on the Meuse River in a panhandle protruding into Belgium, between the French city of Charleville-Mézières and the Belgian municipality of Dinant, near the comune of Givet. The first reactor, Chooz A, was an early pressurized water reactor (PWR) design by Westinghouse, built and operated by French (EDF) and Belgian (SENA) grid operators. It was shut down in 1991 after an operational life of 22 years. The containment building of this unit was underground. Decommissioning was authorised in 2007. After preliminary work, decommissioning of the reactor pressure vessel began in 2016. As of 2022, vessel’s internal equipment was being dismantled under water. Two units of the N4 reactor design are currently in operation, Chooz B1 and Chooz B2. Designed for a net power output of 1450 MWe, power was uprated to 1500 MWe in 2003. This was the highest nameplate capacity for any reactor design worldwide until the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant in China began operation. The Taishan plant is an EPR design reactor with a net power output of greater than 1,600 MWe per reactor. The plant employs around 1000 full-time workers. The Chooz reactors were a source of neutrinos for the Chooz neutrino oscillation experiment; a new experiment, Double Chooz, was also operating nearby. (en)
