- Chienbäse is a Fasnacht tradition of Liestal, Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland. On the Sunday night after Ash Wednesday, the night before the Morgestraich in Basel city, a procession begins of people carrying burning bundles of pinewood chips (called Chienbäse, the Alemannic German for "pinewood besom") through the medieval town center along the Rathausstrasse, entering through the city gate from the south. In more recent decades the Chienbäse have been augmented with carts carrying bonfires, with flames often reaching as high as the houses. The parade is attended by thousands of spectators from Switzerland as well as from countries around the globe, closely packed on either side of the small street. The origins of the custom are open to speculation. Often identified as a "pagan spring ritual" due to the archaic qualities of the fire spectacle, the earliest report of a procession of torch bearers dates to 1869. A tradition of bonfires before Lent has a longer history of attestation, dating from at least the 16th century. (en)
- Als Chienbäse bezeichnet man eine am Sonntagabend nach Aschermittwoch stattfindende Fastnachtsveranstaltung in Liestal im Bezirk Liestal des Kantons Basel-Landschaft in der Schweiz. Dabei werden aus Föhrenscheiten (Kiefernholz) gebundene «Besen» von 20 bis 100 kg Gewicht brennend durch die Liestaler Altstadt getragen. Höhepunkte des Umzugs sind die etwa 20 Feuerwagen – eiserne Wagen, die jeweils mehrere Ster brennenden Holzes tragen. Besonders hoch lodern die Flammen nach der Fahrt durch das Liestaler Obertor auf. Der Anlass zieht Zehntausende von Zuschauern aus der ganzen Schweiz und dem angrenzenden Ausland an. Dass in Liestal schon vor mehr als 200 Jahren am Funkensonntag Höhenfeuer auf den Anhöhen Burg und Weisse Fluh loderten, ist in Chroniken nachzulesen. Seit 1902 fanden im Zusammenhang mit der Fasnacht Fackelumzüge durch Liestal statt. Der Chienbäse-Umzug selbst wurde aber erst nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg vom Liestaler Bäcker Eugen Stutz begründet, zuerst als kleiner Umzug mit Schülern, nach einem Auslandaufenthalt ab 1924 in grösserer Form. In Deutschland ist der Chienbäse als Feuerwagenumzug bekannt. Mittlerweile hat der Brauch ohne Feuerwagen unter dem Namen «Füürbäse» auch einen Ableger in Sirnach (Kanton Thurgau) gefunden. (de)
- Cheinbäse es una fiesta tradicional de Liestal, Basilea-Campiña, Suiza. En la noche del Domingo después del Miércoles de ceniza, y la noche antes de la Morgestraich que da inicio al carnaval (Fasnacht) en la ciudad de Basilea, una procesión de gente lleva brasas quemadas de pino (llamadas Chienbäse) alrededor de hogueras. En las más recientes décadas han aumentado la capacidad de los carros con hogueras, cuyas llamas a veces llegan tan alto como el tejado de las casas. Los carros hacen un recorrido por el centro medieval de Liestal, a lo largo de la Rathausstrasse, entrando por la puerta meridional de la ciudad. Cientos de espectadores presencian el desfile provenientes tanto de Suiza como del extranjero. Sobre los orígenes de esta costumbre hay muchas especulaciones. A veces se la ha identificado como ritual "pagano" de primavera. La más temprana documentación de la procesión data de 1869. La tradición de las hogueras tiene una historia más antigua aún, remontándose al siglo XVI. (es)
