Chesterfield is a historic market town and local government district in Derbyshire, a county in England. It lies north of Derby, on a confluence of the rivers Rother and Hipper. Including Staveley, the population (2001) is 100,879, although the town itself is 70,260. It is Derbyshire's largest town, although the county town of Derbyshire is Matlock in the Derbyshire Dales.

Das Wahrzeichen der Stadt ist die schiefe Kirchturmspitze der Kirche Saint Mary and All Saints. Die Spitze weicht rund 2,9 Meter vom Mittelpunkt der Kegelbasis ab und ist noch um ein Achtel um die eigene Achse verdreht. Die Krümmung ist vermutlich beim Bau im 14.Jh. durch die Verwendung noch zu frischen Eichenholzes verursacht worden. Beim Austrocknen verformte sich wahrscheinlich die Spitze. Andere vermuten eine unsachgemäße Verstrebung. Daher ist der Turm in den "Verein der gedrehten Spitztürme Europas " aufgenommen worden. In Europa sind 90 Türme registriert. Dem Volksglauben nach war der Kirchturm eines Tages so verblüfft, als einmal eine tatsächliche Jungfrau vor den Traualtar der Kirche trat, dass er sich hinabbeugte, um sich die Braut näher zu besehen. Was er da sah ließ ihn gebeugt zurück. Einer anderen Legende nach beschlug ein Schmied aus Bolsover dem Teufel die Hufe so unsanft, dass er über den Kirchturm sprang. (de)

Byen fikk sitt markedscharter fra kong Johan uten land i 1204. Den vokste sakte men sikkert frem til det 19. århundre, da den fikk velstandstider på grunn av jernbanen. Chesterfieldlinjen, som var en del av North Midland-linjen mellom Derby og Leeds, ble påbegynt av George Stephenson i 1837. Under konstruksjonen oppdaget man en stor kullåre. Stephenson startet opp et gruveselskap, som tok ut både kull og jernmalm i området. Stephenson bodde i Tapton House i Chesterfield resten av livet, og er gravlagt i Trinity Church. Byens mest kjente landemerke er spiret til kirken Saint Mary and All Saints. Det kalles «det crooked spire» og oppen lener seg nesten 3 meter til siden i forhold til tårnets midtpunkt.
