Tot 2014 was het een deelgemeente, daarna kreeg het de status van bestuurscommissiegebied. Op 31 juli 2017 telde Charlois 66.750 inwoners op een oppervlakte van 11,9 km². Het bestuurscommissiegebied strekt zich uit tot de A15 in het zuiden, de Eemhaven in het westen, de Nieuwe Maas en de Maashaven in het noorden. In het oosten vormen de Dordtselaan, de Strevelsweg en de Vaanweg de grens met het stadsdeel Feijenoord. De Vaanweg (A29) vormt de grens met het stadsdeel IJsselmonde. (nl)

Charlois było osobną wsią założoną ok. 1460 roku przez Karola Zuchwałego, który był jednocześnie hrabią Charolais we Francji, stąd nazwa wsi. Charlois zostało włączone do Rotterdamu w 1895 roku. Najstarszym zabytkiem jest kościół Oude Kerk z 1467 roku. Od północy połączenie z centrum miasta przez rzekę Mozę zapewnia Maastunnel – podwodny tunel pieszy i samochodowy, zbudowany z zatapianych segmentów w 1942 roku. Na południu znajduje się hala widowiskowa Ahoy z 1971 roku. Od zachodu dzielnica graniczy bezpośrednio z kompleksem portowym Rotterdamu (Europort). (pl)
