- Les Suites per a violoncel sol (BWV 1007-1012) de Johann Sebastian Bach són actualment un element ineludible del repertori per a aquest instrument. Les sis suites segueixen la mateixa estructura i ordre de moviments, tots en la mateixa tonalitat de la suite: 1.

- Suity pro sólové violoncello německého skladatele Johanna Sebastiana Bacha je cyklus šesti skladeb pro sólový smyčcový nástroj, jenž byl vytvořen pravděpodobně kolem roku 1720 v Köthenu. První suita (BWV 1007) je psána v tónině G dur, druhá (BWV 1008) v d moll, třetí (BWV 1009) v C dur, čtvrtá (BWV 1010) v Es dur, pátá (BWV 1011) v c moll a šestá (BWV 1012) v D dur. Pátá suita existuje i ve verzi pro loutnu (BWV 995). Bach standardní formu suity (allemanda – courante – sarabanda – gigue) v tomto díle rozšířil o úvodní předehru (preludium) a navíc mezi sarabandu a gigue vkládal ještě takzvanou galanterii, taneční větu v uspořádání A B A. V prvních dvou suitách jsou galanteriemi menuety, v dalších dvou autor použil bourrée a v posledních dvou suitách tvoří galanterii gavoty. Struktura Bachových violoncellových suit tedy vypadá takto:

* Gigue Provedení každé následující suity zabere víc času než předchozí. Například na nahrávce, kterou pořídil Heinrich Schiff, je trvání suit následující: I. 14:49, II. 18:17, III. 20:46, IV. 21:05, V. 21:55, VI. 26:24; celkem tedy více než 123 minut hudby. Suity se dochovaly ve třech dobových rukopisech, jeden pochází z pera Anny Magdaleny Bachové, další dva od Bachových žáků. Dlouho byly považovány spíše za technicky náročnou instruktivní literaturu, než za díla vhodná ke koncertnímu provedení. Tento pohled změnil až na počátku 20. století Pablo Casals, který suity veřejně hrál a později pořídil i jejich nahrávku. Od té doby jsou běžnou součástí koncertního repertoáru violoncellistů. (cs)

Die Handschrift vereinigt sechs Suiten, also Folgen von Einzelsätzen, die – oft stark stilisiert – auf die modischen Hoftänze der Entstehungszeit und der vorhergehenden Generation anspielen. An den Spieler stellen die sechs Werke hohe Anforderungen: „Bachs Kompositionen für Solo-Violine und -Cello stehen für höchste Virtuosität, und dies, gerade auch im Blick auf ihre Einzigartigkeit, mehr noch als seine Clavierwerke, die ähnliche technische Anforderungen stellen“, schreibt Christoph Wolff; besonders hebt er hervor, dass die Streicher-Solowerke trotz ihrer instrumentenbedingten Einschränkungen in der kompositorischen Beherrschung des Materials hinter Clavierwerken der gleichen Zeit nicht zurückstehen. Cellisten neigen zu noch höherer Einschätzung der sechs Suiten; so Pau Casals: „Sie sind die Quintessenz von Bachs Schaffen, und Bach selbst ist die Quintessenz aller Musik.“ (de)

- The six Cello Suites, BWV 1007–1012, are suites for unaccompanied cello by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750). They are some of the most frequently performed solo compositions ever written for cello. Bach most likely composed them during the period 1717–1723, when he served as Kapellmeister in Köthen. The title given on the cover of the Anna Magdalena Bach manuscript was Suites à Violoncello Solo senza Basso (Suites for cello solo without bass). As usual in a Baroque musical suite, after the prelude which begins each suite, all the other movements are based around baroque dance types; the cello suites are structured in six movements each: prelude, allemande, courante, sarabande, two minuets or two bourrées or two gavottes, and a final gigue. Gary S. Dalkin of MusicWeb International called Bach's cello suites "among the most profound of all classical music works" and Wilfrid Mellers described them in 1980 as "Monophonic music wherein a man has created a dance of God". Due to the works' technical demands, étude-like nature, and difficulty in interpretation because of the non-annotated nature of the surviving copies, the cello suites were little known and rarely publicly performed until they were recorded by Pablo Casals (1876–1973) in the early 20th century. They have since been performed and recorded by many renowned cellists and have been transcribed for numerous other instruments; they are considered some of Bach's greatest musical achievements. (en)
