He was a United States Senator from Florida from 1987 to 2005 and the governor of that state from 1979 to 1987. Following a failed bid for the Democratic Party nomination in the 2004 presidential race, Graham was considered a possible running mate for John Kerry. Graham dropped out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination on October 6, 2003 and announced his retirement from the Senate on November 3, 2003. Graham is now concentrating his efforts on the newly established Bob Graham Center for Public Service [http://www.graham.centers.ufl.edu] at his undergraduate alma mater, the University of Florida. Za jego gubernatorstwa m.in. zainicjowano wiele programów ochrony środowiska. Jako gubernator Graham stanowczo popierał stosowanie kary śmierci. Za jego kadencji 16 osób zostało straconych na krześle elektrycznym (więcej niż za rządów jakiegokolwiek innego gubernatora w tym czasie). Podpisał też 147 nakazów egzekucji i ułaskawił 6 osób. W wyborach w 1986 wybrano go w skład Senatu federalnego. W 2003 zgłosił swoją kandydaturę do nominacji prezydenckiej demokratów w wyborach 2004. Przegrał jednak prawybory. Wymieniano go jako głównego pretendenta do nominacji wiceprezydenckiej u boku senatora Johna Kerry'ego, który ostatecznie zdecydował się na wspólny start z Johnem Edwardsem. W 2005 Graham opuścił Senat. Jest popularnym politykiem, nigdy nie przegrał żadnych wyborów. (pl)
