- Black Cat Bones were a British heavy blues rock band that existed with various lineups from 1966 to 1971. The band had English musicians Paul Kossoff and Simon Kirke in its lineup, both of whom later helped form Free in 1968 with Paul Rodgers and Andy Fraser; Kirke and Rodgers then helped found the more successful British rock supergroup Bad Company in 1974. Rod Price was the guitarist on the band's only album, Barbed Wire Sandwich, released in 1970, and went on to play in Foghat. Other members went on to play in Leaf Hound, Shagrat, Atomic Rooster, Cactus and Fleetwood Mac. (en)

Les membres fondateurs sont Paul Tiller (chant et harmonica), Paul Kossoff (guitare), les frères Brooks : Derek à la guitare et à la basse ainsi que Terry Sims à la batterie. Le groupe a été rendu célèbre par le passage de Kossoff et de Simon Kirke dans sa composition. Les deux compères rejoignent plus tard Free en 1968. Kirke fondera Bad Company en 1974. Black Cat Bones (dont le nom vient de l'os de chat noir, un charme hoodoo associé au blues) joue régulièrement sur la scène londonienne. Très tôt après sa création, le groupe connaît plusieurs changements dans sa composition : Frank Perry remplace Terry Sims. Il est lui-même remplacé par Simon Kirke début 1968. Paul Tiller est remplacé par Brian Short. Le groupe perd bientôt Kossoff et Kirke qui sont remplacés par Rod Price (guitare) et Phil Lenoir (batterie) ; c'est ainsi composé que Black Cat Bones enregistre Barbed Wire Sandwich, son seul véritable album, aux studios Tangerine et Decca ; il sortira en novembre 1969. L'album ne rencontre pas beaucoup de succès et Brian Short, Rod Price, and Phil Lenoir quittent le groupe qui est alors dissout. Le chanteur Pete French et le guitariste Mick Halls rejoignent Derek et Stuart Brooks. Après l'embauche de Keith George Young, le groupe devient Leaf Hound en 1970. De band werd opgericht in 1966 met als leden Paul Tiller (zang en mondharmonica), Paul Kossoff (leadgitaar), Terry Sims (drums) en de broers Derek Brooks (ritmegitaar) en Stu Brooks (basgitaar). Terry Sims werd echter al snel vervangen door Frank Perry, die in 1968 weer vervangen werd door Simon Kirke. Black Cat Bones, overigens genoemd naar een met blues geassocieerde talisman uit de voodoo, kreeg uiteindelijk ook een andere zanger. Zo werd Paul Tiller vervangen door Brian Short. Na deze vele wijzigingen in bandsamenstelling, verlieten uiteindelijk ook Kossoff en Kirke de band nog. Zij gingen in Free spelen. Nadat gitarist Rod Price en drummer Phil Lenoir hun plaatsen hadden ingenomen werd met de nieuwe bandsamenstelling een album opgenomen. Barbed Wire Sandwich kwam uit in november 1969. Em seu início tocavam em bares londrinos ganhando dessa forma muitos fãs. Porém as sucessivas mudanças de formação e a saída de Kirke e Kossoff foram somadas ao fracasso de crítica do disco Barbed Wire Sandwich em 1969 resultando no término da banda. (pt)
