Billy Butterfield (January 14, 1917 in Middleton, Ohio – March 18, 1988) was a jazz trumpeter, flugelhornist and cornetist.He studied cornet with Frank Simons, but later switched to studying medicine. He did not give up on music and quit medicine after finding success as a trumpeter. Early in his career he played in the band of Austin Wylie. He gained attention working with Bob Crosby and later worked with Artie Shaw. Between 1943 and 1947 he led his own band, which in 1943, recorded the jazz standard "Moonlight in Vermont", featuring Margaret Whiting. He was a member of the World's Greatest Jazz Band led by Yank Lawson and Bob Haggart from the 1960s till his death in 1988. He freelanced as guest star with many bands all over the world. In addition he was performing as part of the many Jazz festivals including the Manassas Jazz Festival and Dick Gibsons Bash in Colorado.

- Charles William „Billy“ Butterfield (*14. Januar 1917 in Middleton; 18. März 1988 in North Palm Beach) war ein US-amerikanischer Jazz-Trompeter des Traditional Jazz und Swing. Butterfield studierte zuerst Kornett bei Frank Simons, begann dann aber ein Medizinstudium. Das gab er wieder zugunsten des Trompetenspiels auf und war zunächst in den Bands von Austin Wiley und Andy Anderson. Bekannt wurde er 1937 bis 1940 als Solist in der Big Band von Bob Crosby und bei dessen Bobcats. Sein Solo auf „Whats new“ wurde zu seiner Erkennungsmelodie. 1940/1 war er bei Artie Shaw, u. a. 1940 bei dessen Gramercy Five und in dem Film „The Second Chorus“. Bekannt wurde sein Solo in „Stardust“. 1941/2 war er bei Benny Goodman und danach bei Les Brown. Nach seiner Militärzeit in einer US-Army Band spielte er in den Radioorchestern von ABC und NBC und leitete bis 1947 eine eigene, kommerziell aber nicht erfolgreiche Big Band. Danach war er Studiomusiker, spielte hin und wieder bei Eddie Condon und arbeitete ab 1959 teilweise als Lehrer in Rescue in Virginia. 1968 bis 1972 war er Mitglied der „World's Greatest Jazz Band“ von Yank Lawson und Bob Haggart. In den 1970er Jahren spielte er u. a. mit Flip Phillips und der „Great Eight“ und war häufig in Europa und Südafrika zu hören. Er war verheiratet und hatte zwei Töchter und zwei Söhne. (de)
