Bento de Jesus Caraça, (April 18, 1901 – June 25, 1948) was an influential Portuguese mathematician, economist and statistician. Caraça was also a member of the Portuguese Communist Party and so, he became one of the most famous personalities in the resistance against the Fascist regime led by António Oliveira Salazar. Jesus Caraça was born in Vila Viçosa, near Évora, in the south of Portugal.

Jesus Caraça was born in Vila Viçosa, near Évora, in the south of Portugal. He was the son of two peasants, João António Caraça and Domingas da Conceição Espadinha. He lived his first years in the farm were his fathers worked and he managed to learn how to read with another peasant, José Percheiro. The great easiness in learning new things that Caraça demonstrated made the spouse of the owner of the farm were he lived to take care of his education and, in 1911, Caraça finished the first studies and left his hometown in order to study in Lisbon. After finishing high school with top grades, Caraça joined the Superior Institute of Economic and Financial Sciences By November 1 of 1919, being a student of the 2nd year of its course, Caraça was nominated 2nd assistant by his teacher Mira Fernandes. He graduated in 1923.In December 13 of 1924, he was nominated 1st assistant and, in October 14 of 1927 he was nominated professor and in December 28 of 1929 he was nominated cathedratic professor, teaching algebra and infinitesimal calculus. Meanwhile, Caraça had participated in the foundation of the Portuguese Popular University, an institution created to give working class people the chance of studying. Caraça became a member of the Administration Council when he was still a student and in 1928, he became the President of University. He carried out the organization of the University's library and several conferences about mathematics, arts, history and several other issues. (en)

Licenciou-se em 1923, no Instituto Superior de Ciências Económicas e Financeiras .Em 1936 funda o Núcleo de Matemática, Física e Química juntamente com outros recém doutorados nas áreas da matemática e física.Em 1938, com os professores Mira Fernandes e Beirão da Veiga, funda o Centro de Estudos de Matemáticas Aplicadas à Economia, que dirigiu até Outubro de 1946, ano da sua extinção pelo Governo.Em 1940, com os professores António Monteiro, Hugo Ribeiro, José da Silva Paulo e Manuel Zaluar criou a Gazeta de Matemática.Em 1941 cria a “Biblioteca Cosmos”, para edição de livros de divulgação científica e cultural, a qual publicou 114 livros, com uma tiragem global de 793 500 exemplares.Em 1946 é preso pela PIDE e, em Outubro desse mesmo ano, demitido do lugar de professor catedrático do ISCEF. Colaborou também nas revistas Técnica, Gazeta da Matemática, Seara Nova, Vértice e Revista de Economia.Em 1943 torna-se presidente da Sociedade Portuguesa de Matemática.
