In spite of all their fears and misery, though, they stay at their posts when the battle is at its worst, and exhibit great pride in their unit and in themselves. Daar aangekomen, zonder buitengewone uitrusting, nemen ze een positie buiten de stad in waar ze zich ingraven, de kou, de sneeuw, Duitse patrouilles en beschietingen verdurend. Na verloop van tijd breekt de zon door, eerst letterlijk (zodat ze luchtsteun en voorraden krijgen) en dan ook figuurlijk: ze worden ontzet.
