- The second of two battles in al-Qusayr started on 19 May 2013, as part of the larger al-Qusayr offensive, launched in early April 2013 by the Syrian Army and the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, during the Syrian civil war, with the aim of capturing the villages around the rebel-held town of al-Qusayr and ultimately launching an attack on the town itself. The region was strategically important as a supply route for rebels fighting Syrian government forces in Homs and also for the Syrian government, as it lies between the capital, Damascus, and the Syrian coast, a stronghold for Assad supporters. Prior to the offensive, the Syrian Air Force dropped leaflets over the town warning that government forces were going to attack the city. This led to thousands of civilians fleeing, though 25,000 residents stayed. Free Syrian Army (FSA) General Salim Idris warned of a "massacre" if the Syrian Army and Hezbollah were to take the town. During the final days of the battle Hezbollah forces and rebels negotiated a withdrawal plan, in which the rebels and civilians could evacuate the town through a narrow corridor without being attacked. On 5 June, after two weeks of fighting, the Syrian Army and Hezbollah regained control of al-Qusayr as the last rebel contingents retreated. One observer described the battle as the "defining battle of the country's civil war." (en)

El objetivo de dicha operación era recapturar la ciudad de Qusair y sus alrededores, ya que constituía una importante línea de abastecimiento tanto para los rebeldes que estaban asediando la ciudad de Homs como para el gobierno, dado que se halla justo entre Damasco y la costa (ambos bastiones del gobierno). - La battaglia di Qusayr è stata una battaglia occorsa durante la guerra civile siriana ed iniziata il 19 maggio 2013, nel contesto di una più larga offensiva condotta a sud del governatorato di Homs dall'esercito siriano e dalla milizia libanese sciita Hezbollah. Scopo dell'attacco è la conquista della cittadina siriana di Al-Qusayr, a ridosso del confine libanese, controllata dai ribelli siriani fin dall'aprile 2012. L'area oggetto dell'operazione è ritenuta dal governo siriano strategica per diversi motivi:
* controlla il valico di confine con Hermel, roccaforte di Hezbollah in Libano, che è da tempo un centro di passaggio di armi tra la milizia sciita e il governo siriano.
* giace sulla strada di collegamento Damasco-Homs e su quella che da Homs conduce alla costa.
* permette il controllo totale della periferia sud di Homs e apre una via di accesso alla città. La battaglia si conclude il 5 giugno 2013 con una vittoria governativa completa che costituisce un punto di svolta per l'andamento della guerra civile: i ribelli perdono l'iniziativa e, per la prima volta dal 2011, sono costretti a cedere ampie zone di territorio. La sconfitta e la ritirata disorganizzata provocano tensioni all'interno del fronte ribelle, con accuse reciproche tra i comandanti sul campo e la dirigenza politica del Consiglio Nazionale Siriano, considerata troppo lontana dal campo di battaglia, e tra le diverse anime della rivolta armata che si scambiano accuse sulla responsabilità della sconfitta.
