- The Battle of Fort Ridgely was an early battle in the Dakota War of 1862. Built between 1853–1855 in the southern part of what was then the territory of Minnesota, Fort Ridgely was the only military post between the Dakota Reservation and the settlers. As of August 18, 1862, the fort was garrisoned by 76 men and two officers of Company B of the 5th Minnesota Infantry Regiment, under the command of Captain John S. Marsh, who had fought in the Civil War in the First Battle of Bull Run. (en)

- Bitwa o Fort Ridgely – starcie zbrojne, które miało miejsce w trakcie powstania Dakotów w Minnesocie. Po rozpoczęciu powstania Santiów palili okoliczne farmy białych osadników. Wielu z osadników (prawdopodobnie setki) zginęło. Ci, którzy ocaleli szukali schronienia m.in. w Forcie Ridgley. Fort Ridgley był jedyną placówką wojskową pomiędzy rezerwatem Santee a Fortem Snelling i St. Paul – stolicą Minnesoty. Znajdowały się tam niewielkie siły wojskowe, które dodatkowo jeszcze zostały pomniejszone przez klęskę kapitana Marsha przy przeprawie Redwood. Gdyby Santiowie zaatakowali fort w dniu przybycia - mogli liczyć na sukces. Później jednak zaczęły docierać do niego posiłki. Do fortu dotarły grupy ochotników. Fort nie posiadał barykady, jego budynki były rozrzucone na pewnej przestrzeni i w części zbudowane z desek. Skuteczność obrony zależała w dużej części od umiejętności sierżanta Johna Jonesa, doświadczonego artylerzysty, wspieranego przez J.C. Whipple'a artylerzystę z czasów wojny meksykańskiej. W forcie oprócz żołnierzy i cywilnych ochotników znajdowało się około 250 uchodźców (w większości kobiet i dzieci). (pl)
