I motivi dell'equivoco furono causati da un errore della guida caccia della RAF dovuto ad un difetto degli schermi radar che, a quanto pare, per un effetto specchio mostravano i caccia inglesi in posizione opposta rispetto alle loro vere coordinate. L'origine del nome è oscura in quanto l'errore non avvenne nei pressi del Barking Creek. Comunque questo episodio mostrò molte imprecisioni nella macchina della difesa aerea britannica nel suo complesso, e indusse i dirigenti a introdurre un apparato IFF (identificazione amico-nemico) che certamente avrebbe potuto impedire lo scontro con gli aerei "sconosciuti". I due aviatori abbatterono gli aerei amici, uccidendo uno dei piloti e ferendo l'altro. Freeborn e Byrne comparirono davanti alla Corte Marziale britannica il 7 ottobre 1939: furono assolti e in seguito si distinsero come piloti nella RAF. Gli Hurricane abbattuti furono i primi aerei abbattuti dagli Spitfire. (it)
