The BMW N53 is a naturally aspirated straight-six petrol engine which was produced from 2006 to 2013. The N53 replaced the BMW N52 and was released in 2006 in the post-facelift E60 5 Series.   • Der BMW N53 wurde im Jahr 2007 mit dem LCI (Life Cycle Impulse / Modellüberarbeitung) des BMW E60 erstmals produziert. Er zählt zur 14. und gegenwärtig (2017) letzten Generation von BMWs Reihensechszylinder-Saugmotoren. Die wichtigsten Neuerungen gegenüber dem Vorgängermodell BMW N52 sind die Benzin-Direkteinspritzung und eine Benzinverbrauchsreduzierung durch Magerbetrieb mit Schichtladung im Teillastbereich. Der Magerbetrieb bedingt einen erhöhten Stickoxidausstoß (NOx), der Einsatz eines speziellen NOx-Speicherkatalysators ist deshalb zwingend. Die Wirkungsweise eines NOx-Speicherkatalysators erfordert schwefelarmen Kraftstoff. Wegen der hohen Schwefelkonzentrationen im Treibstoff, der in den USA und Australien verkauft wird, bietet BMW den Motor in diesen Ländern nicht an.
