De auto werd voor het eerst in maart 2005 aangeboden in 4 verschillende versies: 320i, 325i, 330i en 320d. Later dat jaar, in september, kwamen er nog 5 andere versies uit: 318i, 325xi, 330xi, 330d en 330xd. De "x" staat voor vierwielaandrijving. In maart 2006 heeft BMW de sportieve en exclusieve 320si uitgebracht. In september 2006 zijn nog eens 3 versies uitgekomen: de 335i, 325d en 335d. Tenslotte bracht BMW in maart 2007 de 335xi uit.
De E90 sedan was snel de best verkopende auto van BMW geworden; aan het eind van het eerste jaar waren er al 229.900 auto's afgeleverd. Od początku paleta silnikowa była bogata, tworzyły ją silniki benzynowe 320i (150 KM), 325i (218 KM) i 330i (258 KM) oraz diesle 320d (163 KM) i 330d (231KM). Jesienią 2005 roku zaoferowano dodatkowo silnik sześciocylindrowy i napęd na cztery koła.
w 2006 roku na rynek weszła wersja Coupe ochrzczona symbolem [E92]. W coupe debiutuje podwójnie doładowany sześciocylindrowiec o pojemności trzech litrów oznaczony jako 335i. Silnik ten posiada moc 306 KM i rozwija moment obrotowy 400 Nm. Sedan także będzie oferowany w wersjach 320si (173 KM) i 325d (197 KM). Na początku 2007 roku kabriolet na bazie BMW E46 będzie zastąpiony wersją ze składanym metalowym dachem typu hardtop (coupe cabrio), a w połowie 2007 roku do oferty dołączy nowe BMW M3 z silnikiem V8 o mocy 420KM.
