- An atmospheric diving suit (ADS) is a small one-person articulated submersible which resembles a suit of armour, with elaborate pressure joints to allow articulation while maintaining an internal pressure of one atmosphere. An ADS can enable diving at depths of up to 700 metres (2,300 ft) for many hours by eliminating the majority of significant physiological dangers associated with deep diving. The occupant of an ADS does not need to decompress, and there is no need for special gas mixtures, so there is little danger of decompression sickness or nitrogen narcosis when the ADS is functioning properly. An ADS can permit less skilled swimmers to complete deep dives, albeit at the expense of dexterity. Atmospheric diving suits in current use include the Newtsuit, Exosuit, Hardsuit and the WASP, all of which are self-contained hard suits that incorporate propulsion units. The Hardsuit is constructed from cast aluminum (forged aluminum in a version constructed for the US Navy for submarine rescue); the upper hull is made from cast aluminum, while the bottom dome is machined aluminum. The WASP is of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) body tube construction. (en)
- Beim Panzertauchanzug handelt es sich um eine Sonderform eines Tauchanzuges oder um ein bewegliches Einmann-U-Boot. Der Anzug ist starr, ein Druckausgleich mit dem Wasserdruck der Umgebung findet nicht statt. Die Beweglichkeit von Armen und Beinen wird durch spezielle, den Druck intern ausgleichende Gelenke hergestellt. Da eine Benutzung der Hände nicht möglich ist, werden Greifer als Manipulatoren eingesetzt. Im Gegensatz zum Gerätetauchen können und konnten, auch ohne Einsatz von Sättigungstauchtechniken und Gasgemischen, bereits früh größere Tiefen erreicht werden und der Aufwand ist vergleichsweise geringer. Im Anzug selbst herrscht Oberflächendruck, eine Dekompression ist nicht notwendig. Als Atemgerät dient primär und sekundär (für Notfälle) in der Regel ein Sauerstoffkreislaufgerät. Abwerfbare Gewichte sorgen für eine Notaufstiegsmöglichkeit, der Anzug samt Taucher selbst ist dank Luftinhalt leichter als Wasser, er schwimmt auf. In der englischen Literatur taucht die Technologie auch unter den Begriffen Hardsuit und Atmospheric Diving Suit auf. Die Umschreibungen Armoured Diver und Iron Man sind dagegen möglicherweise literarischen Ursprungs. Der ebenfalls verwendete Ausdruck Skaphander bezeichnet allgemein einen Druck- oder Schutzanzug, gemeint ist dabei oft eine reguläre Helmtaucherausrüstung oder ein Druckanzug für die Fliegerei. (de)

Ces scaphandres sont destinés à explorer les grandes profondeurs marines et sont conçus pour résister à de gigantesques pressions, afin de protéger le scaphandrier qui les utilise. - Una Atmospheric Diving Suit (ADS, in italiano tradotta talvolta con Sistema per l'immersione a pressione atmosferica o anche Scafandro Rigido Articolato è un sommergibile antropomorfico adattato all'uso di una singola persona, in tutto rassomigliante ad una complessa armatura articolata nella quale la pressione interna viene mantenuta al valore di una atmosfera. Una Atmospheric Diving Suit può essere considerata come un'evoluzione ad alta tecnologia dell'attrezzatura da palombaro, e consente immersioni fino a 300 metri di profondità per svariate ore, eliminando inoltre la maggior parte dei problemi fisiologici associati alle immersioni profonde: non si ha necessità di decompressione e non c'è pericolo di malattia da decompressione o di narcosi da azoto, dato che l'immersione si effettua a pressione atmosferica.
