  • Argo ist ein internationales ozeanographisches Beobachtungssystem der Weltmeere, das sich auf eine Flotte von ca. 3000 robotischen Treibbojen (Sonden) verschiedener Baureihen zur Datengewinnung stützt. Die Sonden messen den Salzgehalt und die Meerestemperatur in Tiefen von bis zu zwei Kilometern und übertragen diese per Satellit. Durch Positionsangaben werden auch Daten über Meeresströmungen gewonnen. Manche Baureihen erfassen auch weitere Daten, z.B. den Sauerstoffgehalt des Wassers. Die gesammelten Daten sind im Internet frei einsehbar. Das Argo-Programm ist ein Gemeinschaftsprojekt von Forschungseinrichtungen aus 26 Staaten. Die USA finanzieren etwa die Hälfte des Projektes, gefolgt von Japan, Deutschland, Frankreich, Australien, Südkorea und dem UK. (de)
