| - The Argentine Blue-bill or Argentine Lake Duck or Argentine Ruddy duck (Oxyura vittata) is a small South American stiff-tailed duck. Range: Chile and Argentina, sometimes migrating in winter to southern Brazil and Paraguay. Clumsy on land since their legs are set unusually far back. They spend most of their time in water where they feed by diving, and rarely fly. Lake ducks are small, around 640 grams, and about 40 cm in length. The male duck (or drake) has a black head, reddish-brown body, and blue bill. The female is less colorful, with a brown body, white throat, and a white horizontal stripe on the side of the head below the eyes.It is notable for possessing, in relation to body length, the longest penis of all vertebrates; the penis, which is coiled up in flaccid state, can reach about the same length as the animal itself when fully erect, but more commonly is about half the bird's length. It is theorized that the remarkable size of the spiny penis with its bristled tip may have evolved in response to competitive pressure in these highly promiscuous birds, removing sperm from previous matings in the manner of a bottle brush. Although most male birds have no penis, ducks have a long corkscrew penis, and the females have a long corkscrew vagina, which spirals in the opposite direction. The males often try to force copulation, but the complex mating geometry allows the females to retain control -- most of the forced copulations do not result in successful fertilisation. (en)

Es natural de América del Sur. Anida en el sur de Brasil, Uruguay, Argentina y Chile. En invierno se desplaza hasta el centro de Brasil y Paraguay. Habita en los lagos de agua dulce y en las marismas de agua dulce donde hay lagos. Se le documenta desde el nivel del mar hasta los 800 metros de elevación.La nidada consiste de seis a doce huevos. Es posible encontrar nidos donde más de una hembra haya depositado sus huevos. La incubación es efectuada por la hembra. La longitudes de unos 46 cm con un peso aproximado de 600 gramos.Es notable por poseer, respecto a la longitud del cuerpo, el pene más largo de todos los vertebrados; el pene que se enrolla en el estado flácido y puede alcanzar la misma longitud que el animal cuando totalmente erecto, pero más comúnmente tiene el largo de la mitad la longitud del pájaro. Se teoriza que el tamaño notable del pene espinoso con su punta erizada puede haber evolucionado por presión competitiva en éstos los pájaros muy promiscuos, quitando el esperma con las uniones anteriores de la manera que un cepillo limpia una botella.
