It was spun-off from the Gnutella network in 2002, and is currently hosted on SourceForge. net. Ares Galaxy has a simple, quick access interface with a built in audio/video viewer. The latest versions also support the BitTorrent protocol and Shoutcast radio stations.

Es software libre y se desarrolla en el lenguaje de programación Delphi para el sistema operativo Microsoft Windows. Actualmente se puede usar la red de Ares en GNU/Linux mediante GiFT, o ejecutando el cliente oficial bajo Wine. Ares originalmente trabajaba con la red Gnutella, pero seis meses después de su creación, en diciembre de 2002, se optó por empezar a desarrollar su propia red independiente y descentralizada, montada sobre una arquitectura de red P2P de tipo "leaf nodes-y-supernodos" ofreciendo un sistema de búsqueda tipo broadcasting inspirada por la arquitectura de la red P2P de Gnutella; fue así como empezó a nacer lo que sería la red de Ares Galaxy.
