  • and an ancient breastplate are shown nearby.]] Since the introduction of the Book of Mormon in 1830, both Mormon and non-Mormon archaeologists have studied its claims in reference to known archaeological evidence. Latter Day Saints generally believe that the Book of Mormon describes historical events, however the existence of the civilizations and people described in the Book of Mormon is not accepted by mainstream historians or archaeologists. The Book of Mormon tells of three principal migrations of small groups of people who traveled, by boat, one circa 1000 B.C. and the other two circa 600 B.C. to what are now known as the Americas. These travelers and their descendants included the Jaredites, the Nephites and Lamanites, and the descendants of Mulek also known as Mulekites. The founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, Joseph Smith, taught that the Lamanites were the ancestors of the modern day American Indians. There is a general consensus amongst members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that the people described in the Book of Mormon lived somewhere on either North or South America, but also that the purpose of the book is not to document the history of the people described within it. Authorities of the LDS Church emphasize that the Book of Mormon is primarily a religious record, although they also claim that it is a historical work. However, the Book of Mormon mentions several animals, plants, and technologies that are not believed to have existed in pre-Columbian America, including the following: ass, bull, calf, cow, horses, ox, sheep, swine, goats, elephants, wheat, barley, figs, grape, silk , steel, bellows, brass, breast plates, copper, iron, ore (mining), plows, swords and other elements. The Smithsonian Institution has stated that the Institute "considers the Book of Mormon a religious document and not a scientific guide" and that it "has found no archaeological evidence to support [the book's] claims." Similarly, the National Geographic Society has stated "Archaeologists and other scholars have long probed the hemisphere's past and the society does not know of anything found so far that has substantiated the Book of Mormon."
