Er begann seine Karriere in den 1980er in Kinofilmen wie Ich glaub', ich steh' im Wald in kleineren Rollen. In der Actionkomödie Gotcha! – Ein irrer Trip aus dem Jahr 1985 spielte er die Hauptrolle.
Erstmals einem großen öffentlichen Publikum bekannt wurde Edwards an der Seite von Tom Cruise in der Rolle des Lt. Nick 'Goose' Bradshaw in dem Film Top Gun. Danach war er auch in Der Klient zu sehen.
Zweifellos am bekanntesten ist Edwards für seine Darstellung des Notaufnahmearztes Dr. Mark Greene, der Hauptfigur in den ersten acht Staffeln (1994–2002) der äußerst erfolgreichen und langlebigen US-amerikanischen Fernsehserie Emergency Room – Die Notaufnahme. Für diese Darstellung wurde er mehrfach für den Emmy nominiert, konnte ihn aber nie gewinnen. Allerdings ging der bisher einzige für ER verliehene Golden Globe an Edwards. (de)

Edwards syntyi Kalifornian Santa Barbarassa viisilapsisen perheen kuopukseksi. Hänen perheensä tuki hänen näyttelijähaaveitaan pienestä pitäen. Alettuaan saada televisiorooleja hän jättäytyi pois yliopistosta ja keskittyi näyttelemiseen. Edwardsin ensimmäinen iso rooli oli Goosen hahmo Tom Cruisen tähdittämässä elokuvassa Top Gun vuonna 1986. Hän näytteli myös "kuplamies" Mike Monroeta Villi Pohjola -sarjassa. Parhaiten hänet kuitenkin tunnetaan suositusta televisiosarjasta Teho-osasto, jossa hän esitti tohtori Mark Greenea. Mark Greene oli yksi sarjan pitkäaikaisimmista päähenkilöistä, ja Edwards näytteli häntä sarjassa vuosina 1994-2002 aina siihen asti, kunnes Edwardsin hahmo kuoli aivosyöpään.

Cadet d'une famille de 5 enfants (père architecte et mère artiste peintre), il se forme au théâtre très jeune. A 16 ans, il a déjà joué dans une douzaine de pièces et de comédies musicales. Le lycée terminé, il s'inscrit à la Royal Academy of Dramatic Art de Londres. De retour aux États-Unis il reprend ses cours à l'université de Californie du Sud tout en décrochant quelques petits rôle au cinéma dans des films tels que Heart Like a Wheel et Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
En 1982 il quitte définitivement la faculté pour jouer dans la série It Takes Two.
En 1986 son rôle dans Top Gun lui permet de décrocher des rôles de plus en plus intéressants.
En 1994 il est engagé dans "Urgences".
A partir de 1994 il réalise des téléfilms, principalement des épisodes de séries. (fr)
