She made her first appearance on the stage at eight years old at Academy of Music, Montreal, Canada. She moved to the West Indies for a brief period when she was twelve. In her adult career, Russell performed mostly in New York City, earning the lead role in many productions, such as Esmeralda, Bret Harte's Sue, and Major Barbara.
