Ferner wird der Gewöhnliche Strandhafer aufgrund seines ausgedehnten Wurzelwerkes im Rahmen von Küstenschutzmaßnahmen als Erosionsschutz zur Befestigung von Randdünen, heute seltener auch auf Binnendünen und Flugsandfeldern, angepflanzt. - Ammophila arenaria is a species of grass in the family Poaceae. It is known by the common names marram grass and European beachgrass. It is one of two species of the genus Ammophila. It is native to the coastlines of Europe and North Africa where it grows in the sands of beach dunes. It is a perennial grass forming stiff, hardy clumps of erect stems up to 1.2 metres (3.9 ft) in height. It grows from a network of thick rhizomes which give it a sturdy anchor in its sand substrate and allow it to spread upward as sand accumulates. These rhizomes can grow laterally by 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) in six months. One clump can produce 100 new shoots annually. The rhizomes tolerate submersion in sea water and can break off and float in the currents to establish the grass at new sites. The leaves are up to 1 metre (3 ft 3 in) long and sharply pointed. The cylindrical inflorescence is up to 30 centimetres (12 in) long. It is adapted to habitat made up of shifting, accreting sand layers, as well as that composed of stabilised dunes. (en)

- Helm of helmgras (Ammophila arenaria), ook wel duingras genoemd, is een vaste plant, die tot de grassenfamilie (Poaceae) behoort. Het is een pioniersplant die belangrijk is bij de vorming van duinen. De plant produceert lange wortelstokken en waar deze wortelstokken met licht in aanraking komen ontstaat een nieuwe spruit. Om het zand vast te leggen als zeewering wordt aan de kust van Nederland en België, en bijvoorbeeld ook in Australië, langs de kust helm aangeplant. De meterslange wortels van de plant zoeken in de diepte de zoetwaterlens die zich enkele meters onder de duintop, maar boven het zoute water in de zandbodem bevindt. De plant beschermt zich tegen zout water door een symbiotische relatie met een speciale schimmel op zijn wortels, die de water- en zouttoevoer naar de plant regelt. De plant is een xerofyt. Wanneer de omgeving droog is, rolt het blad zich op waardoor het oppervlak waarover verdamping plaatsvindt, kleiner is. Het is overigens niet het eerste gras dat zich op het strand kan vestigen, dat is biestarwegras. Helm volgt na biestarwegras als jonge duintjes zo hoog geworden zijn dat zich uit invallend regenwater een zoetwaterlens in het duin vormt. (nl)
