- Die Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (auch SDUK), gegründet 1826, war eine Organisation der britischen Whig-Partei, London, welche preiswerte Texte mit der Zielsetzung publizierte, wissenschaftliche und hochwertige Materialien für die sich rapide alphabetisierende und umfassender lesende Bevölkerung zur Verfügung zu stellen. Ihre Gründung wurde vor allem von Henry Peter Brougham, 1. Baron Brougham and Vaux mit dem Ziel vorangetrieben, eine Bildungsmöglichkeit für Menschen zu schaffen, die zu formalen Bildungseinrichtungen keinen Zugang finden konnten oder autodidaktisches Lernen bevorzugten. - La Sociedad para la Difusión de Conocimientos Útiles (en inglés Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge), fue fundada en 1826 y es una organización del partido whig británico londinense que publicó textos de costo relativamente accesible con objeto de adaptar material científico y otros temas similares para el público lector, población que comenzaba a expandirse rápidamente. Se fundó sobre todo a iniciativa de Henry David Thoreau a fin de publicar información para todas aquellas personas que no tenían posibilidades de recibir educación formal o que preferían ser autodidactas. Algunas fuentes de la época la denominaban por sus iniciales SDUK. En los Estados Unidos se fundó, por la misma fecha, un grupo con el mismo nombre, como parte del . Su división en Boston fomentó la lectura a través de oradores de la talla de Ralph Waldo Emerson, y se mantuvo activa de 1829 a 1947. - La Società per la Diffusione del Sapere Utile fu fondata a Londra nel 1826 da Lord Henry Brougham insieme a molti altri riformisti in seguito ad un articolo di Charles Knight apparso su un giornale nel 1821 che deplorava la cattiva influenza della stampa popolare sulle classi lavoratrici. Brougham aveva già scritto "Osservazioni pratiche sull'Educazione del Popolo, dirette alle classi industriose, ed a chi dà loro impiego." un opuscolo che proponeva la pubblicazione di libri di divulgazione scientifica e cultura generale a basso prezzo. Alcuni sospettano che a partire dal suo nome la SDUK fu costituita in parte anche come rivale della meglio conosciuta "Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge" a differenza di questa, le edizioni della SDUK preferivano la verità scientifica rispetto ai Dogmi religiosi.
