| - Allen Mulherin Steele, Jr. (born January 19, 1958) is an American science fiction author. Steele began publishing short stories in 1988. His early novels formed a future history beginning with Orbital Decay and continuing through Labyrinth of Night. Some of his early novels such as Orbital Decay and Lunar Descent were about blue-collar workers working on future construction projects in space. Since 1992, he has tended to focus on stand-alone projects and short stories, although he has written four novels about the moon Coyote. Steele was born in Nashville, Tennessee. He received a Bachelor's from New England College and a Master's from The University of Missouri. Before he established himself as a science fiction author, he spent several years working as a journalist. In 1996, his story "The Death of Captain Future" received the Hugo Award for Best Novella. He won the award again in 1998 for the story "... Where Angels Fear to Tread." Steele serves on the Board of Advisors for both the Space Frontier Foundation and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America, and he is a former member (Eastern Regional Director) of the SFWA Board of Directors. In April, 2001, he testified before the Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics of the U.S. House of Representatives, in hearings regarding space exploration in the 21st century. Hij werkte enkele jaren als journalist voor SF schrijver zijn beroep werd. Steele publiceerde zijn eerste verhaal, Live from the Mars Hotel, in 1988 in het tijdschrift Asimov's Science Fiction. Zijn vroege romans van Orbital Decay tot en met Labyrinth of Night vormden een future history, waarin een gemeenschappelijke toekomstige achtergrond wordt gebruikt voor een aantal verhalen. Hij won twee Hugo Awards voor beste novelle: in 1996 met The Death of Captain Future en in 1998 met ... Where Angels Fear to Tread. Clarke. Ha vinto due volte il Premio Hugo per il miglior romanzo: nel 1996 con La morte di Capitan Futuro e l'anno successivo con ... where Angels Fear to Tread. Nato a Nashville, nel Tennessee, nel 1958, si diploma nel settore delle comunicazioni e si specializza alla University of Missouri in giornalismo, per poi iniziare la sua carriera di scrittore nella celebre rivista Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine. Esordisce nel 1988 col racconto Live from the Mars Hotel, seguìto nello stesso anno dal primo romanzo, Orbital Decay, che riceve il Premio Locus come miglior opera prima. Nel 1990 pubblica Trembling Earth, un romanzo sulla clonazione dei dinosauri, che però viene eclissato dall'uscita del romanzo Jurassic Park di Michael Crichton, che ha lo stesso tema e monopolizza l'attenzione del pubblico. Nei successivi racconti, Clarke County, Space e Lunar Descent ritorna alle grandi stazioni spaziali orbitanti, e tuttavia non riscuote il successo atteso. Va meglio invece per Labyrinth of Night, che affronta il tema di Marte partendo da reali osservazioni fatte dalla sonda Viking nel 1976, che fotografò alcune strane deformazioni del terreno che sembravano simili ad un enorme volto e ad una città abbandonata, sulla base delle quali Steele costruisce una storia inquietante, intreccio di fatti scientifici e di fantasiose estrapolazioni. A King of Infinite Space è l'ultimo dei racconti che assieme a quelli visti finora compone la seri dei Near Space, essendo basati su un comune background. Nel frattempo con i romanzi The Jericho Iteration e The Tranquillity Alternative Steele da il via alla serie di racconti ambientati nel Coyote Universe, che proseguirà con Oceanspace e Chronospace per poi sfociare nella Coyote Trilogy con Coyote, Coyote Rising e Coyote Frontier .
