Alexandru Athanasiu (born January 1, 1955) is a Romanian politician and jurist. A former leader of the Romanian Social Democratic Party, he is a member of the Social Democratic Party since 2001. Athanasiu served as Prime Minister on an interim basis from December 13 to December 22, 1999, heading the Romanian Democratic Convention cabinet after the resignation of Radu Vasile. On January 1, 2007, with the accession of Romania to the European Union, Athanasiu became a Member of the European Parliament for the PSD .An author of several scientific works, he is the recipient of a PhD in Law, as well as a professor at the University of Bucharest .

Athanasiu studierte bis 1978 Rechtswissenschaften an der Universität Bukarest, war dann von 1978 bis 1982 Richter und anschließend bis 1990 Universitätsassistent. 1989 erhielt er seinen Doktor der Rechtswissenschaften. Nachdem Athanasiu 1990 bis 1999 Dozent an der Universität Bukarest war, wurde er 1999 Universitätsprofessor. Seit 1993 ist Athanasiu Vorsitzender der Rumänischen Gesellschaft für Arbeitsrecht. Vom 13. bis zum 22. Dezember 1999 war Athanasiu kommissarischer Ministerpräsident von Rumänien, nachdem er zuvor zwischen 1996 bis 1999 das Amt des Ministers für Arbeit inne hatte. Seit 2000 gehört er dem rumänischen Senat an und war von 2003 bis 2004 Minister für Bildung und Forschung. Im Zuge der Aufnahme Rumäniens in die Europäische Union ist er seit dem 1.
