Alexandre-Emile Béguyer de Chancourtois (January 20, 1820 – November 14, 1886) was a French geologist and mineralogist who was the first to arrange the chemical elements in order of atomic weights, doing so in 1862. De Chancourtois only published his paper, but did not publish his actual graph with the proposed arrangement. Although his publication was significant, it was ignored by chemists as it was written in terms of geology.

De Chancourtois was also a professor of mine surveying, and later geology at the École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris. He also was the Inspector of Mines in Paris, and was widely responsible for implementing many mine safety regulations and laws during the time. (en)

  • Alexandre-Émile Béguyer de Chancourtois (Parijs, 20 januari 1820 - aldaar, 14 november 1886) was een Frans geoloog.Béguyer de Chancourtois heeft als eerst een soort periodiek systeem gemaakt. Hij noemde het La vis tellurique (de tellurische helix). Dit periodiek systeem kan worden opgevat als een verticaal opgestelde cilinder. De elementen zijn gesorteerd naar stijgend atoomgewicht op een spiraal die rond deze cilinder is gewikkeld. De Chancourtois was eerste om te erkennen dat de elementaire eigenschappen elke acht elementen weer terugkomen, en met behulp van deze grafiek, kon hij de stoichiometrie van verscheidene metaaloxiden voorspellen. Zijn grafiek bevat naast de elementen ook ionen en samenstellingen hetgeen tegenwoordig in het periodiek systeem niet meer het geval is. (nl)
