In 1996 he was a chief negotiator for the Czech-German Declaration on the Mutual Relations and their Future Development. In March 1997 Vondra left to become the Czech Ambassador to the United States, staying there until July 2001. From March 2001 to January 2003, Vondra was the Czech Government Commissioner responsible for preparation of 2002 Prague summit of the NATO. From January to July 2003 Vondra was a Deputy Foreign Minister.He became paying ODS member only after his ministerial appointment and the victory in Senate elections in October 2006. Il est marié et père de trois enfants.Il est diplômé en géographie de l' université Charles de Prague en 1984. Après avoir travaillé quelque temps dans un musée d'oeuvres d'art asiatiques, puis comme programmateur, il fonde en compagnie de l'écrivain Jáchym Topol et Ivan Lamper (aujourd'hui directeur de l'hebdomadaire Respekt un samizdat, la "Revolver revue". Après avoir signé la Charte 77 en 1987, il en devient le porte-parole du 2 au 6 janvier janvier 1989. Il est ensuite condamné en février de la même année à deux mois de prison. Lors de la Révolution de velours, c'est l'un des cofondateurs du Forum civique. Il sera ensuite de 1990 à 1992 conseiller du président Václav Havel, puis vice-ministre des Affaires étrangères . Ukończył geografię na Uniwersytytecie Karola w Pradze. W 1987 podpisał Kartę 77, pełniąc w 1989 roku funkcję jej rzecznika. Aresztowany na dwa miesiące w 1989, po wyjściu z więzienia stał się współzałożycielem Forum Obywatelskiego.Między 1990 a 1992 był doradcą prezydenta Czechosłowacji Vaclava Havla ds. międzynarodowych. Jako wiceminister spraw zagranicznych Republiki Czeskiej prowadził negocjacje nad czesko-niemieckim traktatem o dobrych stosunkach. W 1997 roku został ambasadorem Republiki Czeskiej w USA. Po zakończeniu misji, w 2001 został specjalnym pełnomocnikiem rządu ds. organizacji Szczytu NATO w Pradze. Jesienią 2006 roku został wybrany senatorem Republiki Czeskiej. W pierwszym rządzie Mirka Topolánka pełnił funkcję ministra spraw zagranicznych, obecnie zaś jest wicepremierem Czech odpowiedzialnym za politykę europejską. Wielokrotnie odznaczany.
