- Die Boeing EC-135 ist eine Variante des militärischen Transportflugzeugs C-135 mit spezieller elektronischer Ausrüstung. Die United States Air Force (USAF) setzte sie von 1961 bis 2003 für verschiedene Zwecke ein. Unter anderem nutzte das Strategic Air Command (SAC) sie als luftgestützten Kommandoposten und fliegendes Funkrelais. Die NASA verwendete die EC-135 zur Beobachtung und zur Datenübertragung zwischen Raumfahrzeugen und Bodenstationen. - The Boeing EC-135 is a retired family of command and control aircraft derived from the Boeing C-135 Stratolifter. During the Cold War, the EC-135 was best known for being modified to perform the Looking Glass mission where one EC-135 was always airborne 24 hours a day to serve as flying command post for the Strategic Air Command in the event of nuclear war. Various other EC-135 aircraft sat on airborne and ground alert throughout the Cold War, with the last EC-135C being retired in 1998. The EC-135N variant served as the tracking aircraft for the Apollo program. The Boeing E-6B "TACAMO" replaced the EC-135C. (en)

- Looking Glass staat voor de codenaam die gebruikt wordt voor de vliegende commandopost van het Amerikaanse Strategic Command (STRATCOM). Voor dit vliegtuig gebruikte de USAF jarenlang het airframe van een omgebouwde Boeing EC-135C, een militaire versie van de Boeing 707. Dit airframe werd letterlijk volgestouwd met geavanceerde radar, detectie en communicatieapparatuur; deze ingrijpende ombouw was noodzakelijk voor een goede uitvoering van de Looking Glass missie. Looking Glass functioneerde namelijk als reserve eenheid belast met de Command & Control & Communicatie-coördinatie van alle nucleaire eenheden van de Amerikaanse krijgsmacht als hun commandoposten door vijandelijke acties werden verwoest of onbruikbaar gemaakt. Vanaf oktober 1998 zijn de inmiddels verouderde USAF toestellen na ongeveer 30 jaar dienst afgelost door de nieuwe Boeing E-6 Mercury van de USN. De Looking Glass bemanning is nu samengevoegd met de marinebemanning die de Take Charge And Move Out (TACAMO) taak verricht.
