The municipality covers an area of 867.67 km² (335.01 sq mi) and includes many small outlying communities, the largest of which are Iramuco and . The municipality of Acámbaro is bordered to the north by Tarimoro and Jerécuaro, to the southeast by Tarandacuao, to the south by the state of Michoacán, and to the west by Salvatierra. (en)

- Acámbaro es una ciudad mexicana ubicada en el estado de Guanajuato, cabecera del municipio homónimo. Su nombre, en lengua Tarasca, significa "lugar de Magueyes". Los primeros pobladores de la zona pertenecieron a la cultura de Chupícuaro, una de las más antiguas de Mesoamérica. Fundada en 1526, San Francisco de Acámbaro fue la primera población legal en tierra guanajuatense. El 22 de octubre de 1810 fue declarada Cuartel General del Ejército de América y el cura Hidalgo, reconocido como "Generalísimo de las Américas". El siglo XVIII fue muy próspero para esta región, pues durante este periodo se edificaron diversas construcciones religiosas y civiles de gran importancia. La arquitectura colonial de la región está formada por templos, puentes, fuentes y casonas que son un claro ejemplo de la habilidad y la creatividad artística de sus artífices.
