The Abteiland ("Abbey Land") is a former estate owned by above Passau. From the early 13th century until the seizure of church property under Napoleon in 1803, the region belonged to the Hochstift or Prince-Bishopric of Passau with the as its secular and spiritual head. The region lies in the Bavarian Forest north of the River Danube and east of the River Ilz. It was crossed by a historical trade route, the ("Golden Trail"). Its main settlement was Waldkirchen, which was granted wide-ranging rights by the prince bishops of Passau.

Jahrhundert gehörte das Gebiet bis zur Säkularisation 1803 zum Hochstift Passau mit dem Fürstbischof als weltlichem und geistlichem Oberhaupt. Das Gebiet liegt im Bayerischen Wald nördlich der Donau und östlich der Ilz. Es wurde durch den historischen Handelsweg Goldener Steig durchzogen. Hauptort war Freyung, das von den Passauer Fürstbischöfen mit weitgehenden Freiheitsrechten ausgestattet war. Das Abteiland hat eine hohe Bedeutung als arten- und strukturreiche Kulturlandschaft und wird somit auch als ein Refugium für gefährdete Pflanzen und Tiere betrachtet. Zusammen mit dem Neuburger Wald bildet es innerhalb der Übereinheit Oberpfälzisch-Bayerischer Wald die naturräumliche Haupteinheit 408 Passauer Abteiland und Neuburger Wald.
