- Abraham Verhoeven (1575–1652) was the publisher of the first newspaper of the Southern Netherlands (now Belgium). In 1605 he got his license to print news of military victories in woodblock or copperplate. Thereafter he produced not only prints but also, with increasing frequency, illustrated news pamphlets. From early in 1620 he renewed his license in broader terms and began to print his news booklets as a single series. As a regularly printed news serial, this was the first newspaper of the Southern Netherlands. It was also the first regularly illustrated newspaper, and the first to print a headline on the front page. The newspaper had no consistent name or title masthead, and is known as the Nieuwe Tijdinghen (New Tidings), a retroactive designation given to it by historians and bibliographers. The British Library, however, catalogues its holdings of the series as Antwerp Gazette. Publication of the Nieuwe Tijdinghen ceased in 1629, to be succeeded shortly thereafter by the Wekelijcke Tijdinghen (Weekly Tidings), an unillustrated paper with a reduced format that survived until 1632. Verhoeven's newspapers chronicle the first decade of the Thirty Years' War and of the second phase of the Eighty Years' War from a pro-Catholic and pro-Habsburg editorial perspective. (en)

Nel 1605, anno in cui figura sulla lista dei membri della Corporazione di San Luca di Anversa come stampatore-incisore (printesnydere) e mercante di stampe, ottenne dagli arciduchi Alberto e Isabella il permesso di stampare, su xilografie o calcografie, notizie sulle vittorie militari. Da allora in poi produsse non solo stampe ma anche, con frequenza crescente, opuscoli informativi illustrati. Dal 1619 cominciò a collaborare con Richard Verstegen.. Dall'inizio del 1620 rinnovò la sua licenza in termini più ampi e iniziò a stampare i suoi opuscoli regolarmente e con un numero progressivo. Essendo un periodico di notizie stampato con regolarità, questo fu il primo giornale dei Paesi Bassi meridionali. Fu anche il primo giornale illustrato e il primo a stampare il titolo in prima pagina. Il giornale non aveva un nome, ed è noto agli storici e ai bibliotecari come Nieuwe Tijdinghen (Nuove Notizie). La British Library, tuttavia, cataloga le sue copie del giornale con il nome Antwerp Gazette. - Abraham Verhoeven (Antwerpen, 1575 - aldaar, 1652) was de eerste krantenuitgever van de Zuidelijke Nederlanden. In 1605 bekwam hij een octrooi op het uitgeven van berichten over de overwinningen van Ambrogio Spinola. Vanaf dat moment specialiseerde hij zich in het uitgeven van nieuwsboekjes (pamfletten) en nieuwsprenten, hoewel hij andere publicaties (waaronder gebedsprenten) nog lang bleef uitgeven. Vanaf 1620 vormde hij zijn onregelmatig uitgegeven pamfletten om tot een regelmatig verschijnende reeks. Zodoende gaf hij de eerste krant uit die in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden verscheen. Het werd meermaals per week uitgebracht. Hoewel er geen vaste titel op gedrukt werd, is het nu bekend onder de naam Nieuwe Tijdinghen. Het redactionele perspectief van Verhoevens krant was uitgesproken katholiek en Habsburgs, hoewel slecht nieuws wel stilletjes op de binnenbladzijden afgedrukt werd. Verhoeven bleef de Nieuwe Tijdinghen tot 1629 uitgeven. Daarna gaf hij de Wekelijcke Tijdinghen uit: een verandering niet alleen van naam, maar ook van periodiciteit en van drukformaat. (nl)
