Abdallah Zrika is one of the most famous poets of Morocco. His poetry is free, based on spoken language and unrivalled in contemporary Arabic literature in its spontaneity . Zrika grew up in the poor neighbourhood Ben Msik. At the age of twelve he wrote his first poems. In 1977 he published "Dance of the head and the rose". For the Moroccan youth, he represents the ideal of poetry, of freedom of living and expressing yourself. Because of censorship Zrika spent two years in jail. Six of his poems were deemed morally dangerous. In 1978 he got his degree in sociology. Besides a poet Abdallah Rzika is also a playwright.

  • Abdallah Zrika is een van de bekendste Marokkaanse dichters. Zijn poëzie is vrij, gebaseerd op spreektaal en spontaner dan welke ook in de hedendaagse Arabische literatuur. Zrika is geboren in Casablanca in 1953. Hij is opgegroeid in de arme buurt Ben Msik. Toen hij twaalf was heeft hij zijn eeste gedichten geschreven. In 1977 heeft hij, in eigen beheer, "Dans van het hoofd en de roos", gepubliceerd, met behoorlijk veel succes. Voor de Marokkaanse jeugd vertegenwoordigt Abdallah Zrika het ideaal van poëzie, vrijheid en zelf-expressie. Als gevolg van censuur door de Marokkaanse regering heeft Zrika twee jaar in de gevangenis doorgebracht. Zes van zijn gedichten werden geacht 'moreel' gevaarlijk te zijn.
