- Abacinace je způsob oslepení, kdy je odsouzenému podržen před očima rozžhavený předmět o velmi vysoké teplotě, například železný štít nebo kovový kotel (latinsky bacinus, odtud název techniky). Metoda byla známa již ve starověkém Řecku a naopak používána i v období středověku – například Karel Veliký takto nechal v roce 788 oslepit bavorského vévodu Tassila[zdroj?]. Kromě toho se abacinace objevuje i ve fiktivních dílech, například v Carově kurýrovi Julesa Verna nebo v písni skupiny Slayer. (cs)
- Abacination is a form of corporal punishment or torture, in which the victim is blinded by infliction of intentional damage to the eyes. Damage can be in the form of removal of the eyes or eyelids, slitting the eyes, burning, excessive pressure, chemical burns, nerve injury, or brain damage. In one account, a corrosive chemical, typically slaked lime, was contained in a pair of cups with decaying bottoms, e.g., of paper. The cups were strapped in place over the prisoner's eyes as they were bound in a chair. The slowly draining corrosive agent from the cups eventually ate away at the eyeballs. (en)

Il supplizio consisteva nel causare la cecità della vittima, o esponendola al sole dopo averla privata delle palpebre, oppure avvicinando un bacino rovente agli occhi, che venivano forzosamente tenuti aperti: il calore seccava l’umidità che è attorno alla pupilla causando la cecità. Questa forma di tortura era solitamente usata in guerra dai Bizantini, contro i nemici catturati come prigionieri, ma, secondo la leggenda, una illustre vittima fu già Marco Atilio Regolo. Storicamente tale tortura era praticata specialmente contro re che venivano deposti dal trono o anche contro nobili e feudatari che tramavano contro i sovrani. (it)
