- Adriance Sherwood Foster (1901–1973) was an American botanist known for his studies of plant anatomy. The first plant anatomist at the University of California, Berkeley, he was a two-time recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and served as president of the Botanical Society of America and the International Society of Plant Morphologists. His textbooks Practical Plant Anatomy and Comparative Morphology of Vascular Plants were widely adopted and influential. Foster was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, August 6, 1901, and earned a B.S. at Cornell in 1923, followed by a master's (1925) and doctorate (1926) at Harvard under Irving W. Bailey. After earning his doctorate he spent two years in England working at the University of Leeds, and from 1928 to 1934 was professor of botany at the University of Oklahoma. He joined the U.C. Berkeley faculty in 1934, retiring as professor emeritus in 1968. Foster died on May 1, 1973, from complications of spinal osteomyelitis. The standard author abbreviation A.S.Foster is used to indicate this person as the author when citing a botanical name. (en)

Se graduó en la Universidad de Cornell en 1923, obtuvo el Master en Ciencias en 1925. Se doctoró en 1926 en anatomía vegetal, bajo la guía de , en la Bussey Institution de Harvard. Luego pasó dos años como becario del National Research Council trabajando con en la Universidad de Leeds, Inglaterra. Enseñó en la Universidad de Oklahoma de 1928 a 1934. Ese año, ingresó al departamento de botánica de la Universidad de California en Berkeley, donde fue el primer anatomista de plantas. Fue jefe del departamento entre 1955 y 1960. Impartió cursos de verano en las universidades de Illinois y de Cornell, y luego de su retiro en 1968, los impartió también en la Universidad de Minnesota. Entre sus principales áreas de investigación estuvieron la diferenciación foliar, el crecimiento y diferenciación caulinar, la estructura y diferenciación de idioblastos, y la venación foliar. Tras recibir su primera beca Guggenheim, pudo viajar a Cuba en 1941-42 para estudiar la cícada endémica, Microcycas calocoma, de la cual colectó muestras para sus estudios de meristemos, y realizó un estudio de campo junto con el cubano . Luego, la segunda beca Guggenheim, le permitió trabajar en la Amazonía del Brasil.
