  • 64 Zoo Lane is a children's television programme created by An Vrombaut. It features a 6 year-old girl called Lucy who lives at 64 Zoo Lane, next door to a Zoo. Every night she is told a story by the animals present there. Characters include Georgina the Giraffe, Nelson the Elephant, Tickles and Giggles the monkeys and Molly the hippopotamus. The programme emphasises friendship and responsibility. After the story ends Lucy is normally asleep (certain episodes have her yawning then sleeping in bed, when she's asleep by the end of the normal episodes, she was lulled to sleep by the story), and Georgina puts her in bed. There are many opportunities for learning: exploring language and vocabulary are enhanced by the use of intonation and expression in the character's voices and the themes of the animals' stories support social and emotional issues, including friendships and helping and caring for others. Originally shown in the United Kingdom as part of the BBC's CBeebies lineup for children, it is now shown daily on Playhouse Disney. The show also airs in the United States on Noggin however, since July, 2006 it is being shown intermittently at 6am or 7am Eastern/3am or 4am Pacific, something Noggin has done with its other UK import shows in the past while deciding whether to permanently keep them on the schedule or not, which may be a sign that the show will soon disappear from the channel, as has happened in the past. As of January 2008, 64 Zoo Lane became part of Noggin's late night lineup (after Noggin split off TheN channel for all its "tweenage" shows). In the U.S. version, Lucy's voice is given an American makeover, but the voices of the animals and the theme song remain with British accents. The British version features the voice of Hollyoaks actress Ciara Janson as Lucy. There is also a Scottish Gaelic verson of 64 zoo Lane, Rathad an Sutha, shown in Scotland on BBC Two Scotland. The Theme song is sung in Gaelic. It is produced by BBC Alba. The creator of the TV series, An Vrombaut, also wrote and illustrated six 64 Zoo Lane picture books, based on stories from the TV series.
