- Presidential elections were held in Colombia in 2010. They took place under a two-round system, with an initial vote held on 30 May and a second poll held three weeks later on 20 June. A referendum proposal that would have allowed incumbent President Álvaro Uribe the opportunity to run for a third term was rejected by the Constitutional Court of Colombia in a 7–2 ruling on 26 February 2010. Because no candidate received a majority (more than one-half) of the votes cast in the 30 May poll, the candidates with the two highest vote totals competed in a runoff election on 20 June: Juan Manuel Santos of the liberal-conservative Social Party of National Unity which unites supporters of former President Uribe, and Antanas Mockus from the Green Party. Sin embargo, los resultados de dicho escrutinio mostraron que matemáticamente, ningún candidato alcanzó la mayoría absoluta de los votos por lo que se llevó a cabo una segunda vuelta el día domingo 20 de junio, la cual dio como vencedor al candidato Juan Manuel Santos, quien fue elegido presidente por el número de votantes más alto y sin precedentes en la historia de la democracia colombiana. Una de las principales expectativas que hubo durante este proceso fue la posibilidad de que el presidente Álvaro Uribe pudiese aspirar a un nuevo mandato por tercera vez consecutiva. Sin embargo, tales presunciones acabaron el día 26 de febrero de 2010, cuando la Corte Constitucional de Colombia declaró la inexequibilidad del llamado referendo reeleccionista por irregularidades durante el trámite, proyecto que modificaría la constitución para permitir la hipotética elección por tercera vez del jefe de estado en curso. Se estimó que aproximadamente 3.800.000 de nuevos votantes jóvenes entre 18 y 23 años votarían por primera vez.
