- The Opening Ceremony of the XV Pan American Games took place on 13 July 2007. Considered an audition for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, the Opening Ceremony was praised by the media for its creativity and Olympic-style production value. The Los Angeles Times reported: Brazil's 2nd largest city still must overcome doubts about crime and traffic, among other things, if it hopes to make good on its quixotic bid to play host to the 2016 Olympic Games. But Rio sure has the opening ceremony down pat. On Friday the city inaugurated the 15th Pan American Games with a lavish and creative 3½ -hour show that featured a symphony orchestra, three 100-foot-long coral snakes, Miss Brazil, an alligator the size of a 747, fireworks, a 1,500-piece percussion band and thousands of dancers dressed as everything from ocean waves to water lilies. Approximately 90,000 spectators and 5,000 athletes packed Rio de Janeiro's Maracanã Stadium for the occasion. The ceremony included a cast of 4,000 and a $17 million (US) budget. - A cerimônia de abertura dos Jogos Pan-Americanos de 2007 marcou o início oficial dos XV Jogos Pan-Americanos, ocorridos na cidade do Rio de Janeiro de 12 a 29 de julho de 2007. Sua realização ocorreu no dia 13 de julho às 18 horas (UTC−3) no Estádio do Maracanã, localizado no bairro homônimo, e teve duração de três horas e meia. Produzido pelo americano Scott Givens, que já havia trabalhado em diversas cerimônias de abertura de Jogos Pan-Americanos e Jogos Olímpicos, o evento teve como diretores artísticos a carnavalesca Rosa Magalhães e o designer Luiz Stein. 75 mil espectadores assistiram, no Estádio, às performances artísticas realizadas por cerca de 4.500 artistas voluntários e 5.500 esportistas. Os aspectos centrais da cerimônia de abertura foram baseados na cultura do Brasil e na interatividade com o público. Seguindo as tradições da Organização Desportiva Pan-Americana (ODEPA) e do Movimento Olímpico, foi apresentado, em sua estrutura, um segmento protocolar, composto pelo desfile de apresentação das delegações, discursos das autoridades, hasteamento das bandeiras (nacional, da ODEPA e a olímpica), execução de hinos e juramentos dos atletas e dos árbitros. A parte artística foi dividida em três segmentos: "Energia do Sol", "Energia das Águas" e "Energia do Homem", ressaltando aspectos como a cultura e as belezas naturais do Rio de Janeiro. (pt)
