- El 51è Festival Internacional de Cinema de Canes es va dur a terme del 13 al 24 de maig de 1998, i el director, productor i guionista estatunidenc Martin Scorsese va ser president del jurat. La Palma d'Or fou atorgada a la pel·lícula Mia aioniotita kai mia mera de Theo Angelopoulos. El festival va obrir amb Primary Colors, dirigida per Mike Nichols, i va tancar amb Godzilla, dirigida per Roland Emmerich. Isabelle Huppert va ser la mestressa de cerimònies. En 1998 es van afegir dues seccions noves a la Selecció oficial,Un Certain Regard i Cinéfondation. L'objectiu de la secció Cinéfondation és donar suport a la creació d'obres de cinema al món i contribuir a l'entrada dels nous guionistes en el cercle de les celebritats. Per a això, es seleccionen entre quinze i vint mig i curtmetratges d'estudiants de les escoles de cinema d'arreu del món i els tres millors són guardonats per la Cinéfondation i pel Jurat dels Curtmetratges. La secció Un Certain Regard "premia els joves talents i fomenta treballs innovadors i audaços presentant una de les pel·lícules amb una subvenció que ajudi a la seva distribució a França". , dirigida per Paul Auster, va obrir la secció Un Certain Regard. - The 51st Cannes Film Festival was held from 13 to 24 May 1998. American director, producer, screenwriter, and film historian Martin Scorsese was the Jury President. The Palme d'Or went to the Greek film Mia aioniotita kai mia mera by Theo Angelopoulos. The festival opened with Primary Colors, directed by Mike Nichols, and closed with Godzilla, directed by Roland Emmerich. Isabelle Huppert was the mistress of ceremonies. In 1998, two new sections were added to the Official Selection, the Un Certain Regard and the Cinéfondation. The aim of the Cinéfondation section is to support the creation of works of cinema in the world and to contribute to the entry of the new scenario writers in the circle of the celebrities. For this, fifteen to twenty short and medium-length films by students from film schools from around the world are selected and the best three are awarded by the Cinéfondation and Short films Jury. Section Un Certain Regard "awards young talent and encourages innovative and audacious works by presenting one of the films with a grant to aid its distribution in France". Lulu on the Bridge, directed by Paul Auster, opened the Un Certain Regard section. (en)

El festival se abrió con Primary Colors, dirigida por Mike Nichols y se cerró con Godzilla, dirigida por Roland Emmerich. Isabelle Huppert ejerció como maestra de ceremonias. En 1998 se añadieron dos secciones nuevas a la Selección oficial, Un Certain Regard y Cinéfondation. El objetivo de la sección Cinéfondation era apoyar la creación de obras de cine al mundo y contribuir a la entrada de nuevos guionistas en el círculo de las celebridades. Por eso, se seleccionan una veintena de cortometrajes de estudiantes de las escuelas de cine de todo el mundo y los tresmejores son galardonados por la Cinéfondation y por el Jurado de Cortometrajes. La sección Un Certain Regard "premia a los jóvenes talentos y fomenta trabajos innovadores y audaces presentando una de las películas con una subvención que ayude a su distribución en Francia". - 51. Międzynarodowy Festiwal Filmowy w Cannes odbył się w dniach 13-24 maja 1998 roku. Imprezę otworzył pokaz amerykańskiego filmu Barwy kampanii w reżyserii Mike'a Nicholsa. W konkursie głównym zaprezentowane zostały 22 filmy pochodzące z 12 różnych krajów. Jury pod przewodnictwem amerykańskiego reżysera Martina Scorsese przyznało nagrodę główną festiwalu, Złotą Palmę, greckiemu filmowi Wieczność i jeden dzień w reżyserii Theo Angelopoulosa. Drugą nagrodę w konkursie głównym, Grand Prix, przyznano włoskiemu obrazowi Życie jest piękne w reżyserii Roberta Benigniego. Galę otwarcia i zamknięcia festiwalu prowadziła francuska aktorka Isabelle Huppert. (pl)
