Deu partits es van jugar en cinc caps de setmana entre el 18 de gener i el 15 de març. Including the previous incarnations as the Home Nations and Five Nations, this was the ninety-second series of the northern hemisphere rugby union championship. Ten matches were played over five weekends between 18 January and 15 March. France and Scotland shared the title. Phillipe Sella of France scored a try in every match, repeating the feat achieved three years earlier by fellow Frenchman Patrick Estève. This championship marked a turnaround in the fortunes of the Irish team who won the competition the previous year, but took home the wooden spoon. (en)

A primeggiare in classifica furono, a pari merito, Francia e Scozia, rispettivamente al proprio quattordicesimo e ventesimo titolo; fu la diciottesima volta che il titolo fu condiviso tra almeno due nazionali.L'Irlanda, invece, ripeté la stessa controprestazione della Scozia nel 1985, ovvero terminare ultima con il Whitewash da campione uscente. La Scozia si riprese anche la Calcutta Cup, la sua terza negli ultimi quattro tornei, battendo l'Inghilterra con il massimo scarto fino ad allora realizzato contro tale avversaria, 27 punti, al 2022 insuperato anche dopo il cambio di valore della meta da 4 a 5 punti.
