- The 1968 Democratic National Convention was held August 26–29 at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Earlier that year incumbent President Lyndon B. Johnson had announced he would not seek reelection, thus making the purpose of the convention to select a new presidential nominee for the Democratic Party. The keynote speaker was Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii. Vice President Hubert Humphrey and Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine were nominated for president and vice president, respectively. The most contentious issues of the convention were the continuing American military involvement in the Vietnam War and voting reform, particularly expanding the right to vote for draft-age soldiers (age 18) who were unable to vote as the voting age was 21. The convention also marked a turning point where previously idle groups such as youth and minorities became more involved in politics and voting. The convention of 1968 was held during a year of riots, political turbulence, and mass civil unrest. The assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in April of that year inflamed racial tensions to an unprecedented level. King assassination riots in more than 100 cities followed and marked the end of the civil rights movement. The convention also followed the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy on June 5. Kennedy's assassination derailed the convention, paving the way for Humphrey. Both Kennedy and Senator Eugene McCarthy of Minnesota had been running for the Democratic nomination at the time. The Humphrey–Muskie ticket would be defeated in the presidential election by the Republican ticket of Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew. (en)

Johnson angekündigt hatte, keine Wiederwahl anzustreben, bestand der Zweck des Konvents darin, einen neuen Kandidaten der Demokratischen Partei für das Amt des Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten zu bestimmen. Die Themen des Kongresses waren unter anderem die fortgesetzte militärische Beteiligung der USA am Vietnamkrieg und die Wahlrechtsreform. Der Kongress stellte einen politischen Wendepunkt dar, da bisher kaum vertretene Gruppen wie Jugendliche und Minderheiten stärker in die Politik und das Wahlrecht einbezogen wurden. Der Konvent fand in einem Jahr der Gewalt, der politischen Turbulenzen und der Unruhen in den Vereinigten Staaten statt. So wurde Robert F. Kennedy, der sich neben Senator Eugene McCarthy um die Nominierung beworben hatte, knapp drei Monate vor dem Konvent, am 5. Juni 1968, ermordet. Bereits 1967 hatten Protestgruppen der Gegenkultur und Anti-Vietnamkriegsgruppen sich abgesprochen, nach Chicago zu kommen und den Konvent zu stören. Vertreter der Stadt hatten dagegen versprochen, Recht und Ordnung aufrechtzuerhalten. Acht Tage lang kam es im Umfeld des Konvents zu Zwischenfällen zwischen Demonstranten und der Chicagoer Polizeibehörde sowie der Nationalgarde. Die Ausschreitungen und die Polizeigewalt erlebten ihren Höhepunkt mit vielen Verletzten in der Nacht vom 28. August 1968. Der Konvent nominierte schließlich Vizepräsident Hubert H. Humphrey und Senator Edmund S. Muskie aus Maine als Kandidaten für das Amt des Präsidenten beziehungsweise des Vizepräsidenten. Sie unterlagen bei den Präsidentschaftswahlen im November 1968 den Republikanern Richard Nixon und Spiro Agnew. (de)

Elle a abouti au choix du vice-président sortant Hubert Humphrey, ancien sénateur du Minnesota, comme candidat du Parti démocrate pour l'élection présidentielle de 1968. Humphrey a été préféré aux sénateurs Eugene McCarthy et George McGovern. La convention a surtout été marquée par les manifestations organisées au même moment à Chicago par les Yippies et le , entre autres, et leur violente répression par le Chicago Police Department, la police municipale du maire Richard Daley. Ces événements ont débouché sur le procès très médiatisé des Chicago Seven. Surtout, le président sortant démocrate des États-Unis Lyndon Johnson, fortement impopulaire, renonce à se présenter pour un troisième mandat comme il en avait le droit après avoir succédé en tant que vice-président à John Fitzgerald Kennedy, assassiné en 1963, et ne participe donc pas à la convention démocrate, une première pour ce parti.
