Ve vzájemném dvouzápase se střetli vítěz Poháru mistrů evropských zemí 1966/67, Celtic FC, a vítěz , Racing Club. Vítězem se stal argentinský klub, který zvítězil v dodatečném třetím utkání na neutrální půdě v Montevideu 1:0. (cs)

- The 1967 Intercontinental Cup was a football tie held over three legs in 1967 between the winners of the 1966–67 European Cup, Celtic, and Racing Club, winners of the 1967 Copa Libertadores. The first leg was played at Hampden Park in Glasgow, with Celtic winning 1–0 through a Billy McNeill header. The game however was marred by Racing Club's incessant cynical fouling and spitting. The return match at El Cilindro in Avellaneda was also acrimonious, with Celtic's Ronnie Simpson struck by an object thrown from the crowd just before the start of the match. He was badly dazed and had to be replaced by John Fallon. Celtic again took the lead, but Racing Club fought back to win 2–1 through goals from Norberto Raffo and Juan Carlos Cárdenas. The series of games went to a play-off match in Montevideo, Uruguay. The game was a shambles, exacerbated by Racing Club's continued cynical fouling, Celtic's loss of composure and discipline, and the incompetence of the Paraguayan referee who was clearly out of his depth. Riot police had to intervene on the pitch several times as six players were sent off; four from Celtic and two from Racing Club. Celtic's Bertie Auld however refused to leave the field on being "sent off" and still played for the whole game. Racing Club scored the only goal of the game in the second half through Cárdenas, winning the game 1–0 and the Intercontinental Cup series, becoming the first Argentinian holders of the trophy. (en)

El partido de ida se jugó en Hampden Park en Glasgow, con el Celtic ganando 1 a 0 a través de un cabezazo de Billy McNeill. Tras el gol el juego se vio empañado por el incesante juego rudo de los jugadores argentinos. El partido de vuelta, en el Cilindro de Avellaneda en Avellaneda (Provincia de Buenos Aires), también fue áspero, con Ronnie Simpson de Celtic golpeado por un objeto arrojado por la multitud desde las gradas justo antes del comienzo del partido. Estaba aturdido y tuvo que ser reemplazado por John Fallon. Ya en el partido, Celtic volvió a tomar la delantera, pero Racing Club remontó para ganar 2 a 1 a través de los goles de Norberto Raffo y Juan Carlos Cárdenas. - La Coupe intercontinentale 1967 est la huitième édition de la Coupe intercontinentale de football. Elle oppose lors d'un match aller-retour le club écossais du Celtic Glasgow, vainqueur de la Coupe des clubs champions européens 1966-1967, au club argentin du Racing Club, vainqueur de la Copa Libertadores 1967. Il s'agit de la première apparition de ces deux équipes dans cette compétition. Le vainqueur est décidé selon le barème suivant : deux points pour une victoire, un point pour un match nul et zéro point pour une défaite. En cas d'égalité, un match d'appui est joué. Le match aller se déroule à Hampden Park à Glasgow, le 18 octobre 1967 devant 103 000 spectateurs et est arbitré par l'Espagnol Juan Gardeazábal Garay. Les Écossais s'imposent sur le score de 1-0. Le match retour a lieu à l'Estadio Presidente Juan Domingo Perón d'Avellaneda, le 1er novembre 1967 devant 100 000 spectateurs. La rencontre arbitrée par l'Uruguayen Esteban Marino est remportée par le Racing Club sur le score de 2-1. Les deux clubs ayant le même nombre de points à l'issue de la double confrontation, un match d'appui est joué le 4 novembre 1967 à l'Estadio Centenario de Montevideo, arbitré par le Paraguayen Rodolfo Pérez Osório. Le Racing Club s'impose sur le score de 1-0 dans une rencontre marquée par cinq expulsions et remporte ainsi sa première Coupe intercontinentale. En 2017, le Conseil de la FIFA a reconnu avec document officiel (de jure) tous les champions de la Coupe intercontinentale avec le titre officiel de clubs de football champions du monde, c'est-à-dire avec le titre de champions du monde FIFA, initialement attribué uniquement aux gagnantsles de la Coupe du monde des clubs FIFA.
