| - The 1964 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XVIII Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event which was celebrated in 1964 in Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo, which won the rights to the Games on May 26, 1959, at the 55th IOC Session in Munich, West Germany, over the bids from Detroit, Brussels and Vienna, had been awarded with the organisation of the 1940 Summer Olympics, but this honor had been passed to Helsinki because of Japan's invasion of China. The 1940 Olympics were eventually canceled because of the outbreak of World War II. The 1964 Summer games marked the first time the Olympics were held by a non-Western nation. This was the first Olympics in which South Africa was barred from taking part due to its refusal to racially desegregate its sports. [http://www.gamesbids.com/english/archives/past.shtml].
The games were telecast to the United States using Syncom 3, the first geostationary communication satellite. It was the first television program to cross the Pacific Ocean.

- Les Jeux Olympiques d'été de 1964, jeux de la XVIIIOlympiade de l'ère moderne, ont été célébrés à Tōkyō, au Japon, du 10 au 24 octobre 1964. C'était la première fois que le continent asiatique accueillait cet évènement.
Tōkyō avait déjà été choisie en 1936 par le Comité International Olympique pour organiser les jeux Olympiques d'été de 1940 à l'occasion du anniversaire de la fondation dynastique japonaise, mais la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, et notamment la guerre sino-japonaise commencée dès 1937, avait forcé leur annulation.
Vingt-quatre ans plus tard, les dirigeants japonais voulurent montrer que leur pays s'était relevé de la guerre et, afin de montrer leur puissance économique, ils décidèrent d'investir d'énormes capitaux dans la construction d'installations sportives ultra-modernes.
Ces jeux Olympiques furent un succès populaire : 2 millions de billets furent vendus sur les différents sites olympiques. (fr)

- De Olympische Zomerspelen van de XVIIIe Olympiade werden in 1964 gehouden in Tokio, Japan. Naast Tokio hadden ook Detroit, Wenen en Brussel een poging gedaan om de Spelen te mogen organiseren. Al in 1940 was Tokio gekozen om de Spelen te organiseren, maar deze werden echter later aan Helsinki, Finland toegewezen vanwege de inval van Japan in China. Uiteindelijk gingen de Spelen van 1940 in haar geheel niet door vanwege het uitbreken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De spelen van 1964 waren de eerste die in Azië werden afgewerkt.
De organisatie van de Spelen was, dankzij een budget van zesentwintig miljoen dollar, onberispelijk. De sportaccommodaties waren nagenoeg perfect, met een indrukwekkend stadion en een reusachtig olympisch zwembad. Ook het olympisch dorp was een pareltje. Ondanks deze schitterende infrastructuur ontbrak het de Spelen schijnbaar toch aan geestdrift en warmte. (nl)

- XVIII Igrzyska Olimpijskie odbyły się w 1964 roku w Tokio (Japonia). Igrzyska w "Kraju kwitnącej wiśni" stały się imprezą łączącą tradycje ze współczesnością (zastosowano m.in. najnowsze techniki pomiarów wyników). Po wykluczeniu przez organizatorów niektórych sportowców z Indonezji oraz Korei Północnej kraje te wycofały swoje reprezentacje. MKOL nie wyraził zgody na występ ekip RPA, co było reakcją na rasistowską (w stosunku do czarnoskórej większości) politykę rządu w Pretorii.
Do programu igrzysk wprowadzono kobiecą i męską siatkówkę oraz narodowy sport Japonii - judo. Lekkoatletyka poszerzona została o dwie nowe konkurencje: Pięciobój lekkoatletyczny (późniejszy Siedmiobój) oraz bieg na 400 m (obie wśród kobiet). Igrzyska olimpijskie w Tokio były rekordowe pod względem osiągniętych wyników - pobito 37 rekordów świata i 77 olimpijskich. (pl)
