- Since 1927 the World Snooker Championship had been played as a single-elimination tournament, but between 1964 and 1968, it was defended over seven challenge matches. Following a hiatus after the 1957 World Professional Match-play Championship, the event was revived by Rex Williams on a challenge basis, with the champion being opposed by prominent players. This began in 1964, organised by the Billiards Association and Control Council. The 1957 champion John Pulman contested and won all seven challenge matches against various opponents in the next five years, until the tournament reverted to a knock-out format in 1969. Each match was played over differing lengths and locations, with some being played over a series of matches rather than frames. Three of the matches were played at the Burroughes Hall in London, England; two across South Africa; one in St George's Hall, Liverpool, and the final match in Bolton. The highest break made over the series was a 142 made by Williams in the 25–22 match loss to Pulman. (en)

- Les championnats du monde de snooker de 1964 à 1968 sont une série de matchs de snooker disputés entre 1964 et 1968. Après la disparition, en 1957, des championnats du monde, Rex Williams, un joueur de snooker, tente de redonner vie à une discipline en mal de popularité. Il contacte John Pulman, champion du monde en titre, et Fred Davis, huit fois champion du monde, qui n'avait pas défendu son titre en 1957. Comme en boxe anglaise, le vainqueur du match est désigné champion du monde, et remet son titre en jeu contre un unique adversaire. Au cours de ces quatre années, John Pulman a acquis son titre et l'a défendu avec succès à six reprises, obtenant donc un total de sept titres, jusqu'à ce que les championnats du monde reprennent la formule classique d'un tournoi à élimination directe. Ces titres, bien qu'officiels, ont une valeur contestable par rapport aux titres obtenus en tournoi, du fait qu'il fallait une seule victoire pour obtenir le titre. Rex Williams, za zgodą Billiards Association and Control Council, zaproponował by wznowić mistrzostwa po sześcioletniej przerwie. Odbywać się one miały na zasadzie wyzwania rzuconego ostatniemu mistrzowi świata. Zwycięzcą ostatnich mistrzostw (z 1957) był John Pulman i to on miał bronić, jak się okazało skutecznie, tytułu mistrza. Mistrzostwa w tej formule przetrwały pięć lat, w trakcie których rozegrano siedem meczów z czterema różnymi zawodnikami rzucającymi wyzwanie Pulmanowi. W mistrzostwach z 1969 roku powrócono do formuły pucharowej. (pl)
