- The 1924 British Isles tour to South Africa was the tenth tour by a British Isles team and the fifth to South Africa. The tour is retrospectively classed as one of the British Lions tours, as the Lions naming convention was not adopted until 1950. As well as South Africa, the tour included a game in Salisbury in Rhodesia, in what would become present day Harare in Zimbabwe. (en)
- Die Tour der British Lions nach Südafrika 1924 war eine Rugby-Union-Tour der als British Isles bezeichneten Auswahlmannschaft (heute British and Irish Lions). Sie reiste von Juli bis September 1924 durch Südafrika und bestritt während dieser Zeit 21 Spiele, darunter vier Test Matches gegen die südafrikanische Nationalmannschaft. Die Spieler trugen bei ihrer Ankunft in Südafrika das Löwenmotiv auf ihren Krawatten, worauf die Presse und die Öffentlichkeit das Teams als Lions bezeichnete. Offiziell wurde diese Bezeichnung jedoch erst 1950 eingeführt. Gegen die Provinzteams bekundete die von angeführte britische Auswahl große Mühe; neun Siegen standen zwei Unentschieden und sechs Niederlagen gegenüber. Drei der Test Matches gegen die Springboks gingen verloren, hinzu kam ein Unentschieden. Für die ungewöhnlich schlechte Bilanz gab es mehrere Gründe. Die Mannschaft selbst war nicht unbedingt repräsentativ dafür, was die Home Nations theoretisch hätten aufbieten können – und das in einer Zeit, in der das britische Rugby ohnehin nicht gerade in seiner besten Phase war. Aufgrund der ungewöhnlich harten und sehr trockenen Spielfelder erlitten die Briten mehrere verletzungsbedingte Ausfälle und die Ersatzleute mussten zum Teil auf Positionen eingesetzt werden, mit denen sie nicht vertraut waren. - La squadra di rugby dei British Lions torna dopo 14 anni in tour. Questa volta si reca in sudafrica per un tour disastroso con 3 sconfitte in 4 partite contro il Sudafrica. Era il decimo tour di una rappresentativa delle Isole britanniche ed il quinto in Sudafrica. Fu classificato retrospettivamente come tour dei Lions, in quanto tale definizione fu adottata solo nel 1950. Guidata dall'inglese Ronald Cove-Smith e diretta dal gallese Harry Packer, la squadra disputò 21 match, 17 contro club o selezioni provinciali o squadre ad inviti e 4 test contro la nazionale del Sudafrica. I Lions persero tre match ufficiali su 4 conquistando solo un pareggio. Uno dei peggiori tour della storia dei Lions considerando le sei sconfitte in match minori e una serie di otto partite senza vittorie. Causa del disastro furono l'obiettivo scarso livello delle squadre e dei giocatori britannici e innumerevoli infortuni dovuti al clima caldo sudafricano. (it)
