- The first Swiss football championship was held 1897–98. The championship was not organized by the Swiss Football Association (SFA; founded in 1895) and is therefore considered as unofficial. The tournament was organized by the Geneva newspaper La Suisse Sportive and its editors François-Jean Dégérine and Dr. Aimé Schwob. The championship trophy was donated by the company Ruinart. Only four of the clubs competing were members of the SFA; , Grasshopper Club Zürich, and La Villa Ouchy). The series A was divided into three regional groups, group A in the north, group B the district around Lausanne and group C district of Genève). The winner of each group qualified for the finals. The following are the statistics to the first Swiss national football (soccer) competition (later Swiss Super League). (en)
- Die erste Schweizer Fussballmeisterschaft, die Meisterschaft um den Ruinart-Cup, fand 1897/1898 statt. Die Meisterschaft wurde nicht durch die 1895 gegründete Schweizerische Football-Association (SFA; ab 1913 Schweizerischer Fussball-Verband SFV) organisiert, sondern von der 1897 gegründeten und 1932 aufgelösten Genfer Zeitung «La Suisse sportive». Federführend waren die Redaktoren (Redaktionssekretär), der Kapitän der Rugby-Mannschaft Servette Genfs war, und (Chefredakteur), welcher von 1900 bis 1912 Servette-Präsident sein wird. Der Pokal wurde von der Champagner-Kellerei Ruinart père et fils aus dem französischen Reims gestiftet. Beim Schweizerischen Fussball-Verband gilt diese Meisterschaft als inoffiziell, sie führt den Meister Grasshopper Club Zürich dennoch in ihren Annalen auf. Die Meisterschaft um den Ruinart-Cup wurde in drei regionale Gruppen eingeteilt. Der Sieger jeder Gruppe qualifizierte sich für die Finalspiele. Es dürften einige Spiele fehlen bzw. es fehlen Informationen darüber, wie genau die Finalteilnehmer bestimmt worden sind. Spiele, die keine Auswirkungen auf den weiteren Meisterschaftsverlauf hatten, wurden dabei wahrscheinlich nicht ausgetragen. (de)

- La 1re édition du championnat de Suisse de football est remportée par le Grasshopper Club Zurich. Néanmoins cette compétition n'est pas considérée comme officielle, l'Association suisse de football n'étant pas l'organisateur de la compétition sponsorisée par le journal La Suisse Sportive. Le championnat est divisé en trois groupes régionaux. Le format de la compétition est un format de coupe. (fr)

- In het seizoen 1897/98 werd voor de eerste keer een nationale voetbalkampioenschap georganiseerd in Zwitserland. De krant La Suisse Sportive was sponsor van de competitie. Omdat het kampioenschap niet georganiseerd werd door de Schweizerische Football-Association (Zwitserse voetbalbond, sinds 1913) geldt dit niet als een officieel kampioenschap. Vier deelnemende clubs, FC Château de Lancy, Grasshopper-Club Zürich, Neuchâtel FC en La Villa Ouchy, waren lid van de bond. De Serie A werd in drie regionale groepen verdeeld. Elke groepswinnaar kwalificeerde zich voor de finale. Indien wedstrijden niet langer van belang waren voor de groepswinst werden ze niet gespeeld. Over het verloop van de Serie B en Serie C is niets meer bekend, enkel dat Grasshopper-Club in beide competities aantrad met een tweede en derde elftal. (nl)
