- Álvaro II Nimi a Nkanga va ser manikongo (Mwene Kongo), o rei del regne del Congo, de 1587 a 1614. Va ser un dels reis més poderosos i importants del Congo, que va succeir al seu pare Àlvar I, però no va arribar a resoldre una disputa amb el seu germà. Ambdues parts van portar exèrcits a São Salvador però per evitar el vessament de sang, van acordar un combat individual, guanyat per Àlvar. Àlvar es va enfrontar a seriosos problemes amb altres nobles, a més del seu germà, i en 1590-91 va ser sacsejat per una guerra civil greu, encara que poc documentada. Per restablir la seva autoritat, Àlvar va haver d'acceptar la independència virtual de Miquel, el comte de Soyo. Per reconèixer aquells nobles que li havien estat fidels durant aquesta lluita, Àlvar va començar a concedir hàbits de l'Orde de Crist als seus seguidors. Encara que la corona de Portugal es va queixar al Papa sobre això, afirmant que el rei de Portugal, com a Gran Mestre de l'Ordre era l'únic que podia concedir aquests hàbits, de fet, els reis de Congo establirien aquest orde (vegeu ) i van seguir nomenant cavallers als seus seguidors fins al segle xix. Durant el regnat d'Àlvar, la capital São Salvador va ser reconeguda com a capital de la diòcesi del llavors Congo portuguès i Angola i s'hi va nomenar el primer bisbe en 1596. - Álvaro II Nimi a Nkanga was king of Kongo from 1587 to 1614. He was one of Kongo's most powerful and important kings, who succeeded his father Álvaro I, but not until resolving a dispute with his brother. Both sides brought armies to São Salvador but to avoid bloodshed they agreed to single combat, won by Álvaro. Álvaro faced serious problems with other nobles besides his brother, and in 1590-91 was racked by a serious, though poorly documented civil war. In order to reestablish his authority, Álvaro had to accept the virtual independence of Miguel, the count of Soyo. In order to recognize those nobles who had been loyal to him during this struggle, Álvaro began granting habits of the Order of Christ to his followers. Although the Portuguese crown complained to the Pope about this, claiming that the King of Portugal, as Grand Master of the Order was the only one to grant such habits, in fact, Kongo kings would establish this order (see ) and continued to knight their followers in it right through the nineteenth century. During Álvaro's reign, the capital city, São Salvador was recognized as the capital of the diocese of then Portuguese Congo and Angola, and the first bishop was appointed, in 1596. However, because the kings of Portugal claimed the right of Padroado (patronage), they chose their own bishop. Constant struggles between the king and the bishop followed. Kongo's relations with Portuguese Angola worsened during Álvaro's reign, and he complained bitterly about the behaviour of the governors to the King of Spain (then also ruling Portugal during the period of the Iberian Union). In 1604–1608, Alvaro II sent an ambassador to Pope Paul V in the person of Emanuele Ne Vunda. (en)
