Support is provided for several languages and currencies, and it is freely available under the GNU General Public License. Zen Cart branched from osCommerce as a separate project. Beyond some aesthetic changes, the major differences between the two systems come from Zen Cart's architectural changes(e.g. a template system) and additional included features in the core.

Wywodzi się z OsCommerce, od którego się odłączył jako osobny projekt i poza estetyką odróżnia go długa lista cech. Sklep można dostosować do sprzedaży każdego rodzaju artykułów, działa w wielu językach (także polskim) i walutach. Rozpowszechniany jest za darmo w ramach Otwartego Oprogramowania na licencji GPL. Można stworzyć m. in. rozbudowany system obsługi płatności i opcji wysyłki. Zen Cart™ posiada możliwość dostosowania wyglądu sklepu internetowego do własnych potrzeb dzięki szablonom, które zostały zaimplementowane w strukturę całego sklepu i są oddzielone od kodu programu. Ostatnie polskie tłumaczenie sklepu dotyczy wersji 1.3.7, mimo faktu, iż wydana została już wersja 1.3.8 skryptu. W sierpniu 2007 ekipa rozwijająca Zen Cart™ ogłosiła, że poczynając od wersji 1.4.0 aplikacja będzie wymagała minimum PHP 5.2.
  • Zen Cart är ett webbutiksystem skrivet i PHP och bygger på osCommerce. Projektet startade 2003 då en grupp utvecklare bröt sig loss från osCommerce. Programmet är gratis att använda för alla, källkoden är öppen och det har en administrationspanel där man kan göra många inställningar utan att behöva röra koden. I likhet med osCommerce så kan man lägga till funktioner med hjälp av moduler som finns att ladda ner. Det finns också möjlighet att enkelt byta utseende med hjälp av olika templates, en möjlighet som osCommerce saknar.
